We got a wii nintendo for xmas last yr. now all of a sudden it began turning off in the middle of playing it. It comes back on every once in awhile, but now it doesn't want to turn on at all...it has not been dropped or abused, just used alot..Do you give advice on this type of problem or know who to ask..I guess calling Nintendo will get me the same run around I got last yr with the xbox 360 when it stopped working...

I beg to differ...

You're talking about two completely different companies here. Microsoft is notorious for INCREDIBLE run-arounds. I've never had any luck getting through to them. To be honest, I don't believe that I have EVER accomplished ANYTHING with those people.

Nintendo on the other hand is devoted to their customers. They've been in the gaming business for decades now. Where Microsoft has many different products and services, Nintendo is focused PURELY on the gamers.

The first thing I'll ask you is if you kept the Wii in an enclosed space during use. (Such as in a closed door on an entertainment system.) The Wii - like ALL console systems nowadays, has been known to have certain issues with overheating.

I'll be honest with you here... You describe a progressive situation where your Wii was working just fine, but then it suddenly started turning off in mid-game. It would come back on...but NOW it's not coming back on at all.

When it first started shutting itself off, that was probably an indication that it may have been overheating and shutting itself down by using an internal thermal protection system that shuts the console down automatically in the event of high temperatures in the unit reaching a certain threshold.

Unfortunately, you may not have had any way to know that this was a sign of a bigger problem. So you continued to use it as normal.

Eventually this kind of pattern usually leads to total failure of the unit.

If this is not a heat-related issue, then I would also look to the power supply unit that comes with the unit. (The large, grey power supply unit that plugs into the back of the Wii.) They do sell replacements of course.

But before you do that, decide if you want to spend the money yourself...or if you're willing to wait for a replacement unit from Nintendo.

I advise clearing yourself of any pre-emptive notions about tech-support horrors and contacting Nintendo and describing the issue to them. I have faith in Nintendo as I have been a customer of theirs from day 1 when the very first NES was released. So far, they have never [completely] let me down.

Here is the link to their contact information. As you can see, they have a very easy-to-follow contact list here. I would go with Replacement Parts to begin with and go from there. I'm sure that no matter which number you call, they'll get you to where you need to be. :)

You're also in the warranty period so that is a plus. I doubt you'll have any problems.

Just make sure that wherever you put your Wii in the future that it has plenty of room to breathe! It needs to keep itself cool. It gets quite warm.

Good luck!
