Question about Dyson DC23ACTUSC Bagless Canister Cyclonic Vacuum

Open Question

Dyson DC23 canister vacuum turbine head attachment stops spinning.

Dyson DC23 canister vacuum turbine head does not spin, with red stopper pushed in or out. Brush is clean, and if the rubber 'u' gasket is covered slightly it spins regularly. When you uncover it the brush stops. We have fixed this temporarily with a thin piece of a furniture foot pad stuck to the inside of the turbine head cover, but the 'u' gasket gets clogged VERY easily this way and we have to clean it out every 60 seconds or so of normal vacuuming. All the filters have been cleaned and are in good condition.

SOURCE: The brush bar on my Dyson DC17 stopped turning.

If this model has a brush control - i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model - therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn't able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.

SOURCE: roller brush stops spinning and vacuum makes noise

That means that the belt is stretched and can't turn the brush against the resistance of the carpet. Here is a link for the instructions on how to change the belt and a link for the belt you need:

SOURCE: The spinning brush isn't moving

Belt may be off the motor spindle, with the vacuum off try turning the brush by hand, does it turn freely or can you feel the resistance of the motor?

SOURCE: Brush stopped spinning

If you've had the brush out to clean it you need to re-set the trip switch which is a red button at the right side of the brush simply press it in till it clicks.

    Turbo head has stopped spinning

Hi Fay, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC39 Multi Floor's turbine head has stopped spinning, this could mean there's a blockage in the turbine head, wand, hose or lower duct hose. This could reduce the airflow passing through the machine, which in turn will affect the turbine which powers the rotating brush bar.

It's also a good idea to check the Turbine head is free of any threads, hair or other obstructions:

How do I get a new belt to repace a broken one in a DC23 turbine head

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

The Turbine head's belt is not a part we would ask a customer to fit, and therefore it's not available as an individual component. It's part of the turbine drive mechanism, and we'd advise against attempting to dismantle this as it could result in damage to the Turbine head. If the Turbine head happened to fail within the Dyson warranty period we should normally be able to replace it, as long as it's been used and maintained according to the User guide. Out of warranty, a replacement Turbine head could be chargeable.

Hi Jyn, it's Jack at Dyson.

The rotating brush bar in DC23's Turbine head is powered by the vacuum's airflow. From what you've described, it sounds like there may be a blockage somewhere in the machine that's affecting the performance.

To locate and remove any blockages, please take a look at our online Support guide and follow the steps shown on each of the pages: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc23/dc23-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/check-telescopic-wand-step-1-turbine-head

In normal use the pre-filter should be washed at least once every 3-6 months, using cold water without detergent. Even a filter that appears to be externally clean may still need a wash as fine dust particles may be contained within the filter material. The correct method is shown in the video attached. Make sure you allow the filter to dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing it.

We would advise against attempting to modify the Turbine head in any way, as this could cause damage not covered under guarantee. With my Dyson D23, my carpet power head attachment runs intermittently until it stops working all together.

Hi Megan, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC23. From your question, I'm not sure if you own DC23 Motorhead, which has a motor-driven brush bar, or DC23 Animal, which has a turbine-driven brush bar.

You can find online troubleshooting guides for both of these machines on our Support site. I'd encourage you to select your machine from the list, then follow the diagnostic checks shown:

    Dyson turbine head

Hi Kevin, Alec from VacuumSpot here. Unfortunately Dyson don't actually sell individual mechanical components to their turbine heads, so even though it is probably a pretty easy repair you can't get the parts. In this case you will have to buy a complete new head.

  • Pull the plunger into the ''out'' position for vacuuming carpets.
  • For vacuuming hard floors push the plunger into the ''in'' position to stop the brushbar spinning.
  • Refit the tool onto the machine and test.

    Dyson dc23 lost suction

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC23, but I'm sure we can help. If your vacuum doesn't seem to have as much power as it should do, this is likely to be due to a blockage in the Turbine head, wand or hose. In addition to this, the filter may need washing.

To check for any blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

    http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1298&product=DC23-TURBINEHEAD-US

In normal use, we recommend washing the filter at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

I'm confident this will resolve the issue, but if you'd like further assistance, please give our Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).
