Can't burn CDs/DVDs with the combo drive of my Acer Aspire 4315

There's no problem with the combo drive (ACER Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P ATA) of my Acer Aspire 4315, and yet, I can't get it to burn CDs and DVDs. I'm using BurnAware in my Aspire, which has Vista Business Edition on it. Every time I try to burn stuff, BurnAware always tells me the blank disc is unsuitable. I've tried using different types of blank discs, but I get the same message.
How do I fix this freaky malfunction?
I'd appreciate any technical advice you can give. Please note that you'd to talk to me in layman's terms because I'm no techie.

OK you may want to tr changing the program you use to burn with. This will determine whether it is a hardware fault or a software fault. Try using
http://cdburnerxp.se/ should help.
