I have an emerson ceiling fan with a light AND emerson SWQSRR controller.I can't figure out how the SWQSRR controller could control the fan and light seperately by only using 1 yellow wire?

Because it's a wall remote. Remotes will work fan & light with one hot wire. You should have a receiver in the canopy of the fan.

No light

Check receiver to make sure connections are OK, otherwise you might need a new receiver.

Fan on the ceiling fan works, light does not, it is an Emerson unit wall switch only not remote control

Try pulling the chain once and then try the wall control. Is it a wall REMOTE or dual control? Do you have the number of the wall control?

Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check its battery contacts for any rust or dust. Check it with fresh batteries.
