ATI X800 XT Mac Edition and Mac G5 boot troubleshooting

After 2 months of pretty good working of my ATI X800 XT Mac Edition on my dual 1.8 G5 PowerMac, my Mac began starting up in open firmware mode; moreover, from stop mode it suddenly shuts down when i wake it up by keyboard or mouse click, but not by moving mouse. Exiting or booting from open firmware makes the Mac working absolutely normally.
Why that??
Apple official support laboratory made all possible trials including new buffer battery, but no way. At least they took off the XT800 XT and changed to native GE FORCE FX 5000, and all turned perfectly well. But they could not give me a reasonable explanation, and i still do need that faster graphic card. Can anyone solve my problem? Could it be necessary some ATI ROM update and where could i find it?
ATI website support was not useful.

My Mac is:

Power Mac G5
Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
No CPU: 2
CPU speed : 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus speed : 900 MHz
Boot ROM v. 5.1.8f7

OSX Tiger v. 10.4.10

Thanks for your kind attention and help!

After having problems with my X800 and my Apple 30 inch display after a year and a half of no problems with either, I did a search and found several posts speculating on the possibility of faulty design on ATI's part. I've already gotten an RMA number from ATI through their web site and am sending it in for warranty repair on Monday. Hopefully it'll come back fixed. I'd hate to spend another 300 to 400 on another card.

I have a duel, 2.5 Ghz with a 23" Apple HD Display. 50% of the time, the screen looks like it is fragmenting / sparkling... I had our Apple Computer Guru over last night and he believes it is a warrenty issue... If anybody has experienced the same with a viable correction I am all ears & eyes... Otherwise, it sounds like its going back to ATI to get fixed... Peter

I have the same card and many of the same issues.  I got an RMA number and had to contact ATI after "Clear Business Days" to get a status report.  Having finally gotten a response, I find out that it will be 10 to 12 WEEKS before the card comes back.
Knowing what I know now, I would not purchase this card again.

Go back to the ATI page and sign up for an RMA number under warranty repair/returns. It sounds like your card went kaput. They should be able to fix it for you, although you'll be without your card for about 10 to 14 days.

Hello, I have an X800XT Mac Edition graphics card with a G5 2.0 dual processor and the problem I'm having is that when I boot up my G5, it goes through the spinning weel process, but when it's finished and...

I am going to recommend a hardware approach first and then a software approach, to this issue, in order to assist you. At the end of these procedures, is a general support link from Apple for additional support for no picture in your iMac G5 display

I am seeing more of such display issues like this, and more often than not, if the problem does not have to do with the firmware, it may be a damaged or corrupted file which can hinder the iMac G5 from normal start up functionality.
PMU Reset (try this first)

The PMU (Power Management Unit) is a micro controller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your Mac.

• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord.
• Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
* Boot to your desktop.

This procedure may help but if it does not, follow the procedure below

• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.
• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.
• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.
• Allow the Mac to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while

(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Mac and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment - the only difference is certain startup items are disabled.)

• Once within the Desktop in Safe Mode
• From the Finder Menu, click Go> Go to Folder
• Type in this line: /System/Library/StartupItems
• This path, is going to take you to the System Library folder which has all of your Mac OS X Startupitems.
• Remove all of those folders to the Trash.

*Reboot your Mac normally and see if you can access your normal User desktop environment.

One of these two procedures should help resolve the blank display issue you are experiencing,

This one is pretty clear. Your machine is a June, 2004 model. Your video RAM is bad. Video RAM is not user-replaceable on the Radeon 9800 XT, so you will have to replace the Radeon card itself.
