Hi, I've had my PS2 for about 5 years and while im playing a game my machine will make a funny 'grinding' noise and it will freeze often. i tried opeining it up and cleaning it but nothing happened. Is my PS2 just aging or is this problem solvable?

Re: PS2 dic read help!!!
You have a great console, it just needs some tuning. The arm that moves the laser up and down the rails may have become clogged with lint. I usually clean it out and flex it to apply more pressure down on the worm gear.

Sadly it sounds like your disk lense has been damaged beyond repair. The only way to fix your PS2 is by getting tech support or ordering the replacement parts and repairing it yourself (not recommended).
clean the dust out of the fan,,check and make sure fan is clearing the metal grid it sits on. also,,clean and lube the slider shafts that the laser rides on. use only a drip or 2 on each shaft and use hair clipper oiil or sewing machine oil.
the reason it makes the "grinding" noise is because the motor that moves the lens to read the disk is dieing, this generally happens when you have played your ps2 for a long time, this only happens to older consoles.
the problem with god of war 2 is the ps2 lasers are not capable of reading the dual layer disks. either wait and get a ps3, change the laser - i just bought on for 3 quid on e bay brand new. the lasers are not designed to be played the amount they are played. the laser is designed to play 20 hours a week but as sony found out he avg gamer will clock up up tp 60 hours a week so the lasers are only lasting 1/3rd of the time they should. plus if they put a good laser in the machine u would one buy 1 ps2 and then 1 ps3. i have burned out 3 ps2's so far lol. just forget the game or wait till its put on platinum as these are single layerd disk
