Wont start up completly

My imac g5 wont get past the grey apple with the spinning wheel. I have tried to reset the pram, tried to use the install disk, tried the single restore (cant remember if thats what you call it) and nothing is working......help please. I recently installed some software for a usb network adapter, that worked no problems, then I also did a software update of which only 3 out of the 4 updated (the security update didnt update) then was asked to restart computer after the update, thats when it decided NOT to restart fully.

There is the single user start-up, which you were thinking of. There is also a safe-boot for macs.

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:

1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

During startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

Startup screen has apple with spinning wheel then screen goes black

probably bad, might be disk, ram or logic board.

Try resetting pram and then try rebooting in safe mode by holding down letter s on start up. Try disk or drive select by holding down option key on start up. Make some effort, look up key commands on google and apple support.

You must remove the back panel and press the pushbutton on the motherboard by the 3 leds. If that does not work then you may have the dreaded power supply or capacitor failure. Search the web and youll understand. There are some fix it web sites but if you still have applcare take it in to a apple store and they may repair or even replace the unit.

I would by pass disk repair and unfortunately go straight to reinstalling Leopard. When you get icon and it asks what you wish to do you want to reinstall and safe old files. Once you reinstall leopard you will find all your old files in previous system located in hd icon.

Hi, it seems like a motherboard problem (hardware), you will probably need to bring the mac to an AASP. Before, you can try the Apple Hardware Test, or resetting the PRAM (Hold the cmd, alt, p and r keys)

Screen Changes and Comupter freezes

It may be possible that the power supply, display and or logicbpard may be having issues. Apple recommends resetting the pram and nvram. If issue persists reset SMU. YOur machine is 6 months outside of the original warranty, but if you purchased the 3 year extension plan, you may want to take action on it.
