Question about Audio & Video Receivers
I bought a brand new Onkyo 705 with a KEF 3005 speaker system. At medium or slightly higher volume, the receiver shuts down into a standby mode after 10 or 15 minutes as if it were overloaded or overheated. I put a large fan directly in front of it, and I still have the same problem. The speakers are hooked up correctly, except perhaps the speaker polarity, which I can't tell because the Monster cable has both wires colored the same. I could sort them out with an ohm meter if that is the source of the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I had this same problem and it turned out to be a twisted kink in the speaker wire. Run a sound check to each speaker separately (from your receiver menu) and turn each one up until the receiver shuts off. Check the wire to the speaker that caused it to shut off and make sure the +- ends are not touching each other at either end, and that there are no twists or kinks along the way.

Polarity is not your problem or it could be your problem( you crank it up for the bass which is not there). Speakers out of phase( opposite polarity) will have poor bass response. One speaker is moving out while the other is moving in.
Anything on top of the Onkyo?? Is it in a rack enclosure?? Try fan on top sucking out the heat? Wiring ok? I have seen where a single strain of the neg wire was around the pos wire, making connection with the pos conductor, speakers worked but amp would shut down.
Speakers ok? Measure speaker resistance through the wires at the amp 6-8 ohm is ok for 8 ohm speakers. Only one set of speakers??

Maybe it's the impedance of your speakers....I know that some receivers have a 4/6/8ohm switch to match the speaker impedance. Because hen the current flow is too high (because of speaker impedance and volume) , the receiver will shut itself off.
