IBM-T40 water on motherboard

Where can I send my T40 for repair, replacement of Motherboard?

I have the same laptop and also spilled water on mine. I didn't pull it open quick enough to save it in time. I just recently priced out the replacement parts and the motherboard/keyboard/hard drive run around $300. It's not worth the repair for me.

I need to rest password in bios

Removing the RTC battery and leaving it uninstalled for 5 or more minutes causes all passwords and CMOS settings to be cleared. BIOS password can be removed by temporarily disconnecting/ removing the RTC/ CMOS (Coin-cell) battery from the motherboard.
Disconnect the coin-cell battery from the system board and it will reset the BIOS to its default setting and the password would be gone.
Please Refer to Page 29, 106 & 79 of the REPAIR MANUAL IBM T40 for Battery removal, keyboard removal and RTC battery removal instructions.
The Backup Battery (RTC, CMOS) is located under the keyboard. So you have to remove the keyboard to access the battery. The above Manual from IBM shows the exact method/ instructions and pictures for laptop dis-assembly for the purpose.
If you are comfortable with working inside such electronics, you can't do it yourself, or else you may seek help from local laptop service professional.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

There is no problem in your motherboard. In your motherboard, clean your ram and also where ram is put. Then restart your system again it will work. When it will not work please change your ram. Then it will work.

My IBM thinkpad turns off when i insert my usb internet connection into the usb slot and then wont turn on for a day or 2. What could this be?

It sounds like some sort of power drain or short on the motherboard. I recently made a repair job on a T41,casing on an IBM thinkpad T40 AND T41`S are very week.
My advice to you would be reinstall windows and see if it does it again,If it doesn`t then you will know for sure that it had something to do with windows.IF it still does after a clean installation of windows then its clearly a hardware fault.
*Hardware fault could be you`re power supply not giving enough juice(unlikely) *Motherboard faulty/Or Shorting somewere. If thats the case then a refurbished motherboard would do the trick.

When i turn on my ibm thinkpad t40 a litle lock icon comes up an d re4cuires a pass word

The reason that comes up is because the motherboard has a master password set on it and from my experience the hard drive may have a password set on it as well cause the hard drive and motherboard are linked to each other.

If the original owner can call IBM then they can get both passwords removed. If not then both the motherboard and hard drive will need to be replaced.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 PC Problem

usb ports are very simple decices, almost like a wall socket, they rarely fail, and if they do, it's generally a driver problem or the flat plastic pin inside the port has broken. Plus the usb ports are soldered to the board on these models. So, the usb failure you mentioned leads me to believe that that is another indicater that the board was going out. I'm a big fan of IBM, they are very durable machine. They can really take a beating. I cheched out Ebay and there are several T40 series motherboards up for bid. You should be able to get one at a decent price. Keep in mind that any of the T40 series boards will work for you.
