My brushbar isn't rotating but the belt and motor are fine - any suggestions please

The brushbar needs to rotate in the end pieces that hold it onto the head. If the motor and belts are fine, your problem is the brushbar is seized on its shaft. To solve, remove the bottom plate. Then lift out the end of the brushbar opposite the belt, but do not remove the brushbar. Grab the bar with one hand and the end cap with the other and pull the end cap off. It just slides on the shaft. If the shaft comes with the cap, no problem. That means the opposite end cap came off the shaft. Clean the dust/lint out of there and then take a look at the other end for the same. Slide everything back together and the bar should now be free to rotate on the shaft. Reinstall the bottom plate and you are ready to go.

Belt is still attached, but brush will not turn.

Hi,

If the motor runs but the brushes aren't turning, there are several possible reasons:

1. There is something trapped in or around the brush bar. Lie the vacuum on one side and make sure you can turn the brushes by hand. They should give some resistance when turning by hand, but the should turn.
2. The belt is worn/stretched and is slipping. This is often accompanied by the smell of burning rubber.
3. The belt is broken. It may still look attached to attached to the brushbar but it could be broken inside.
4. The brushbar isn't inserted correctly.

REMEDY: Please follow these simple instructions to determine the cause of the fault.

Disconnect the power and allow to cool for at least an hour if you have been using it

1. Sit on a chair, turn the vacuum upside down and hold it between your knees:

belectric_43.jpg

2. Undo the 3 fasteners at the positions shown in the picture below on the underside of the dyson (use a coin). Pivot the back edge of the sole plate upwards and lift off the sole plate which covers the brush bar:

belectric_44.jpgbelectric_45.jpg

3. Check for any debris around the brushes that may be stopping it from turning

4. Check that the brushbar is correctly inserted:

belectric_49.jpg

5. Check that the belt is intact and tight and correctly looped over the motor spindle:

belectric_47.jpg

If the belt is intact and tight, the brushbar turns freely and is correctly inserted and the motor runs, then your belt is probably worn/stretched and needs replacing.

All of the other possible faults can be fixed once the sole plate is removed (Step 2). Remove any debris from the brushbar, make sure it is correctly inserted, and make sure the belt is correctly looped over both the motor spindle and brushbar.

If you need to replace the belt, please see my other post for replacing the belt on a DC07

If you have done all of the above and there is still no obvious reason why the brushbar isn't turning, please post back for further assistance.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
BElectric.

Burning plastic smell when using the vacuum cleaner

HI, Thanks for contacting the FixYa team.

1. Plastic Burning Smell - This means that there is friction in a plastic part of your Dyson. The only place this will be coming from is the BrushBar. The brushbar has jammed somehow. The smell arises as the rubber belt is still trying to turn the plastic brushbar but the brushbar is not moving. To solve the problem you will need to unscrew the soleplate using a 2 pence piece, this is done by inserting the 2 pence piece into the 3 plastic screws on the underneath of the Dyson. Turn the screws a quarter anticlockwise. You can then remove the soleplate. You will probably see that there is a build up of debris by the brushbar. This is more common on The Animal version as pet hair mixed with dust gets stuck in here, especially if the machine has been used on a damp or wet surface. So clean this area out and then try manually rotating the brush bar in each direction. If you have been using the machine for too long with the burning smell then it is likely that your brushbar will be melted where the belt attaches to it. If this is the case then you will need to get a new brushbar. If the brushbar is not too damaged check that the belt has not broken. If the belt has not broken then replace the soleplate. Turn the screws a quarter in a clockwise direction. Should your belt be broken then please re-post and we will show you how to sort this. Thank you

Dyson vacuum beater bar will not spin, belt is fine

Hi, Thanks for using FixYa! My name is Don/

I will try and help you solve your problem with your Dyson.

If your brushbar wont turn and the belt is definatley fitted correctly then there is a problem with the brushbar itself.

If the brushbar is old then they can be affected internally by clogging up.

Assuming you have the "Clutch" version of Dyson. This is one that has a spiral brushbar.

There are 2 types of brushbar, 1 for the Clutch Version and 1 for the Non Clutch version.

Either way you will need to replace the brushbar. Please watch the video....

Brush doesn't spin

This model has Brush Control
The Brushbar can be turned off to protect rugs and delicate floors
You've either accidently turned the brushbar off or the belts broken

Dc17 Brushbar will not rotate, still under warranty

I'd purse the warranty angle and see what they can do for you first.

As to causes, can you turn the brushbar with your hand? If so, does it turn easily, i.e. maybe your belt is broken. If the brushbar is hard to turn, then look for any obstructions on the brushbar (string, tinsel, etc.) that might be keeping it from turning. Look at the ends and where the belt contacts the bar.

Here's the Dyson customer service number:

1-866-MY-DYSON
(1-866-693-9766)

And here's their website which has warranty and service information.

Good luck!

Brushbar not spinning

Hi.
If your Dc14 is all floors it will have A clutch fitted this is easy to determine just stand in front of your machine look down at the left hand side there will be a coloured knob on the side e.g. blue.yellow, green, purple this will have a pointer on it which when you pull handle back to vacuum must move to drive position you can rotate it by hand if it is stuck in park position ,
If there is no belts broken the brushes will now turn.
If they don’t the chances are one of the 2 belts have snapped.
You will then need Manuals to help you repair the problem.

Go to this site for more infomation.
