Question about Yamaha RX-V661 Receiver

2 Answers

The picture on my TV flickers on and off when I use my DVD player. The problem remains even when I switch to another DVD player. I think the problem may be the HDMI cable on my Yamaha rx-v661. Please help me out if you can.

You cannot run HDMI from any source thru the Yamaha to the TV. The V661 is 1st generation HDMI headache. Version 1.1 which basically is useless. Don't blame Yamaha, it's not their fault, it's HDMI. All manufacturer's receivers prior to 09' series use either 1.1, 1.2, or 1.2a. and they all have issues. So, here's the skinny, run your audio to your receiver via optical or digital coaxial. Then run video directly to the TV via HDMI if you wish. The problem arises when you have more sources than inputs on your TV. Depending on the size of your TV can make a big difference in how you wire it. If your TV is 50" or smaller, just use component, the human eye cannot differentiate between 720p and 1080p and that's a fact. second fact, most TV shows are broadcast in a native resolution of 720p, the only real 1080p programming is on HDNET, Discovery,National Geographic and The NFL.
What I mean by that is the camera used to take the actual picture is a 1080p camera. Major money! so, that being said, if your tv is larger than 50", and it's 1080p not 1080i yes, you can see a difference. If you post a comment and list all your product, I can give you the best possible way to put it all together. I feel your pain and aggrivation! I am a Yamaha, Marantz, Proceed, and Adcom Dealer. I get it from all sides! If there's anyway I can make it easier for you, I will. Hope this helps

Darker picture and high pitched sound from back of tv. Also flickers.

Try changing the input device to something you are sure, works such as a DVD player.

Switch off TV manually, switch off power, remove plug and retry after 48 hours.

If problem persists, please refer it to a qualified service technician.

Flickering picture when setting resolution to 1080P vs 1080I

Hello,

This simply means that your TV isn't capable of handling a 1080 progressive input. This is why it is flickering. Change it back to 1080i(interlaced) and the only time you should ever see flicker is in a still menu. But even then it should be barely noticeable.

If your TV does support 1080progressive then you may want to change the scan frequency of the Yamaha receiver. Common ones are 24 frames/sec or 50/60 Hz. The amplifier should have an auto setting which will detect what the TV can display. The nice thing about HDMI is all that information is transmitted through the cable.

A version 2 or highspeed cable won't change the display at all.

TV picture flickers

If your DVD player is separate from your tv, you might have a loose cable plug or connection. Depending on the type of flicker you have, a vertical circuit loose connection would cause this. If you could connect it to a cable or antenna it might tell you where the problem is located. A faulty circuit in the DVD might cause this too. Stargazer
