Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a very old Whirlpool refrigerator which I just changed the thermostat because of either too cold or too warm.It wasn't turning on or off unless I tapped it. It was working fine for awhile but now I noticed the inside back metal panel where the thermostat wire goes behind is frozen and the refrigerator is 50o or warmer. I have the thermostat set at the highest setting of 5 and it still seems warm according to the refrigertator thermometer. The wire or coil coming off the thermostat is in a plastic sleeve. Should I remove this sleeve or try placing the wire /coil in front of the metal panel? Thanks for any help- Al

Whirlpool side by side refrigerator freezer is warm and fridge section warm tap on thermostat and everything starts up and gets cold

What is the model number of your refrigerator? In most cases replacing a mechanical thermostat that begins doing this is the answer to solving this problem. Problem is I don't know what the type of thermostat yours has because you did not post the model number. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Problem is the thermostat. The heat/cool selector switch might not be making try back and fourth from heat/cool to make a good contact. In heat mode make sure the temp is set LOWER than your cooling temp.If it is too cold in the future just RAISE the cooling temp up and not the heat/cool switch.

Side by side, freezer very cold, frige warm

Any ice buildup is due to one of 2 problems. Either the defrost circuit is not working properlyor the drain hole where the defrosted water drains down to the underneath pan is clogged. I once found a spider's nest in the drain of a refrig that was in a seasonal house after the winter shutdown.

Very common is a defective (open) defrost thermostat, or a bad defrost timer. But for a unit only 5 yrs old I'd start with the drain hole. BE SURE YOU GET ALL THE ICE OUT. Use hot water, hairdryer etc, so water flows freely to drain pan

Turns off won't turn back on unless you move thermostat

Sounds like a defective cold control ( off/on thermostat).
They will tend to stick in the off position. Your moving the knod unsticks it.

" The refrigerator never cycles offThe thermostat cycles the refrigerator on and off. The refrigerator normally runs as long as the temperature inside the refrigerator is higher than the set temperature. If the temperature inside the refrigerator is cold enough and the thermostat still does not cycle off, the thermostat may be defective. If so, you need to replace it, because it cannot be repaired. If the thermostat is not defective, you may have a problem with the sealed (refrigerant) system, in which case you should contact a qualified appliance repair technician.
