Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 Digital Camera

Compatability? Hi, My new Sony DSC-W80 camera is not recognized by my computer (running Mac OX10.3.9).  The camera and cable are fine, since my PC has no problems.  The message on the camera reads "USB Mode Connecting... Switch on [MENU]".  WHen I go to the menu, it gives me different ways to connect to the computer, none of which work.  Any suggestions?

    same problem 10.4.11

My Sony DSC-W80 icon appears on the Mac Desktop, but if I try to open the folder (which is correctly recognzed as DCIM), I get the pinwheel of death. If I try to import into IPHOTO, it imports one photo and stops. When I try to STOP the import, it goes into an endless "STOPPING" mode. When I force quit IPHOTO, it quits but will not re-open when I try to restart it until I turn the camera off. I called SONY - they had no idea what the problem was, and acted as if they had never heard of it. They told me to try another Mac. I'm using a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.8. But, basically, once the camera mounts all the Mac operations go into terminal looping of some sort.

Yes, have same problem - Mac OS X does not recognize USB port connection to Sony DSC-80 Cyber shot camera.

Got new DSC-W80 today.  Can't transfer photos from camera via USB to Macintosh OSX.  Camera isn't recognized. What's worse, now it won't recognize my DSC-W70 which has worked fine for more than a year.  Tried mass storage and pictbridge settings with no improvement.  Just get message in camera saying "USB mode connecting .. Switch on (menu).

    Sony chat support no help.

I was having the same problem only with the W70. I just changed the USB mode to PTP and iphoto then recognized it as a Sony Digital Still Camera, and began importing. Hope this is helpful.

I recently bought a Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and tried to use it with my
PowerBook G4 (using Mac OS X 10.4.11) and it didn't work. At first, I
tried it with the memory stick and an icon appeared on the Mac Desktop,
but if I try to open
the folder (which is correctly recognzed as DCIM), I get the pinwheel
of death. I tried it without the memory stick but i couldn't transfer
the photos via USB. The camera wasn't even recognized. The message on
the camera reads "USB Mode Connecting... Switch on
[MENU]". WHen I go to the menu, it gives me different ways to connect
to the computer, none of which work.

I set the USB to PictBridge mode (press home button, then main settings). Now iPhoto recognizes the camera and I can import photos.

I also tried the keyboard technique after the camera wouldn't mount and it worked for me. Not very convenient given the fact thats its USB 1 so it's slower. But at least it works this way! I have an iMac G5 and had set the camera to Pictbridge.

I may have a least for someone's problem.... I posted earlier as having this same problem. I recently purchased two Sony digital cameras, DSC-W80 and DSC-T200. I took some test photos with both cameras. I tried to connect them to a Powerbook G4 OS 10.3.9. It would not recognize the DSC-W80 at all....the DSC-T200 was recognized by iPhoto, but the computer would not load it as a disk. Then I attempted to load the photos onto my PowerMac G5 OS 10.2.8 and neither camera was recognized by the computer as a drive nor thru iPhoto.

Scouring Sony and Apple websites and newsgroups resulted in nothing, furthermore, I downloaded the Sony DSC-W80 in-depth manual PDF, 120+ pages (more detailed than the manual that came with the camera) and it does not even mention compatibility with Macs. It only says that it is recommended for use with Windows! So I wondered if it was a Marketing Dept. addition to the packaging and advertising, and the cameras weren't developed to work well with Macs in the first place!

So anyway, I was about to return both cameras when I thought about how both computers recognized my old Sony digital camera. It occurred to me that my old camera used a memory stick only. I had not tested the cameras with the stick yet, I was using the internal memory only. When I took more test photos using the memory stick, both computer systems recognized both cameras. It launched iPhoto, AND the stick appeared as a USB drive. I also tested the cameras on a new MacMini with OS 10.4.10, and it didn't have any problems recognizing the stick or the internal memory.

Having this problem is pretty frustrating....I hope this information is helpful to someone else.

I had exact same problem and discovered after hours of fiddling that plugging USB into keyboard worked exactly as it was supposed to .  Camera was not recognized at all in any other slot.

How do i get pictures from cybershot dsc-w80 on a mac

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.

Would you like to open your pictures from your Sony Cybershot to your computer? Your cybershot cam is usually plug and play so you dont need a software for that. All you do is to plug in your camera to your computer's usb port using the usb cable. When the computer detected the new usb device, open a Windows Explorer. Right click your windows Start button, and choose Explore. From the list of Drives from the left, you need to find the Drive letter associated with your camera. Just click on that and it will show you the files on the right. The pictures are located somewhere inside those folders. You just need to click and drag them to your computer's local drive.

Should you have any questions, please let me know. Good luck!

First are you using a genuine Sony battery if not then get one. if you are it is a faulty battery pack and requires replacement, if under warranty take it back to the place of purchase

W80 compatible battery problem

I just have that problem with my 2 year old w80 and I was getting the same message. I have a friend with the same camera type and try his battery pack on my camera and worked fine. I bought in Best Buy a new battery pack and is working as new again. I use my camera very heavy for inspections and seems to be that the battery life came to a end.

USB Mode -- another connecting problem

It looks like the memory card for your Sony camera formatted in either FAT or FAT32 which is readable by windows computers.

If you attempt to use the format feature on your Mac, you will destroy the card
