I downloaded the trial for myself.
The updates took about two hours and when I logged in I got the same message as you "Cannot get User subscription to determine nag."
I closed the window with that message then there was a bit more verifying and updating then the "Play" button appeared and the game works fine.
I can only imagine perhaps you got bored with the updating process which seems to be several years worth of patches.
The update process is essential, you are not allowed to have a different client to all the other users.
If it still isn't working for you then try uninstalling the game completely, download the trial and install it from scratch from

I think it would be wise to create a new account as you have already used a few days of the trial by trying to get it to work.
Note that there was an error at the end of my registration but an e-mail was sent anyway confirming my account login which is working ok.
