Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Am getting an error message that the printer (Epson CX8400 all in one) doesn't recognize the ink cartridges! Always has, why is this happening? Tried usual turn off pc/unplug printer; start over; not working. Uses 69 series magenta, cyan and yellow, plus black 68/69.

Insert all ink tank. Turn on printer. Check status. Replace ink tank using "how to" procedure at status monitor. But you do'nt need to unplug ink tank, just follow, next... next... ok. Last, procedure is ink charging. When chip recognized, ink cahrging will done. But if not, the screen "doesn't recognize the ink " will appear. Don't close it. Push ink button minimum 3 times. 1 to move head to checking empty (error) ink tank, 2 to move head to gap. 3 to move head to parking position. It's methode to force epprom.

Epson ink cartridges, always empty?

Epson has gone to great pains to ensure that third-party cartridges dont work. They really did a good job. Sometimes their printers wont even recognize genuine Epson cartridges. I saw a CX8400 with a brand new cartridge claim it was out of cyan ink after printing one 4 x 6 photo. Then it would recognize any cyan cartridge. It had to go back to Epson for replacement. hello

i have this link below that gives you allinformation about your Epson printer. specifically the manual , required for review to address the issue with the ink cartridge error.

Run a Printer Check A printer check will help you determine if the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series is operating properly. 1. Turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series and your computer, if connected. 2. Disconnect any connected USB cables. 3. Load plain paper in the sheet feeder. 4. Press Setup. 5. Select Maintenance and press OK. 6. Select Nozzle Check and press OK. 7. Press cx7400_cx8400_ug.1.109.1.jpg Start. 8. The Epson Stylus CX8400 Series begins printing the nozzle check pattern. • If the page prints, your Epson Stylus CX8400 Series is operating. Your problem may be caused by your computer, cable, software, or setting selections. Check for additional solutions or re-install your software. If the pattern on the page has gaps, clean or align the print head. • If the page does not print, the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series may have a problem. Check for additional solutions. If they don't work, contact Epson.

Does not reconize non epson ink cartridge. I remove and reinstalled and it printed but now its back to not reconize cartridge.

You did not say if you were using "New-Epson Ink Cartridges", or actually using "Non-Epson Ink Cartridges" [Generic or Third-Party ink cartridges] in your printer. I'm assuming that you are probably using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges, because those are what normally cause that problem, with a printer not recognizing an installed ink cartridge. Unfortunatly, there is no way to make your Epson Printer use or accept that Non-Epson Ink Cartridge, if it cannot actually recognize it. Its even possible that some Generic or Third-Party brands, may not always be recognized by the newer models of Epson Printers, because of the inexpensive [cheap] and or incompatable Electrical Chips that are mounted on the actual ink cartridge. Sometimes you will even get Error Messages up on your Monitors screen, telling you that you are actually using a Non-Epson Ink Cartridge, or that your printer cannot recognize the cartridge that you installed. Sometimes the Ink Level Indicator, on your Status Monitor, will not show an actual ink level, but may indicate a cartridge error or problem instead. Not all Generic or Third-Party ink & ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the Epson Printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the Printhead Assemblies on Epson Printers, or simply won't be accepted at all. Epson Ink Jet Printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made in the last couple of years. Its because the Epson Printers use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubble jetprint heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can actually cause clogging in the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair, so you can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged...Even if you were actually using a New-Epson Ink Cartridge, its always possible that you got a bad cartridge. At this point, the only thing I can suggest is that you try a different New-Epson Ink Cartridge, or at the very least, a different brand of Non-Epson Ink Cartridges and see if that helps...Good Luck!

I have an Epson CX8400 and have replaced the Epson ink cartridges with non-Epson ink cartridges. This has worked in other Epson printers I have owned, but this printer keeps coming up with error messages...

It sounds like the cartridge chips are incompatible so you've probably been sold/sent the wrong cartridges.

It's possible that the printer you have is a later version with an updated firmware which has been programmed to refuse cartridge chips that were compatible with the first printers produced of this model but as the CX8400 is a relatively old printer I'd be a bit surprised if that were the case.

It's also possible that the cartridge chips are badly aligned, soiled (ie: dirty), or that the contact wires in the printhead (the thin/delicate wires that make contact with the chip when the cartridge is installed) are damaged.

Easiest way to tell if the cartridge chips are the problem though is to get a completely different cartridge, preferably some originals and see if they are accepted or not.

Hope that helps.

After cleaning print heads, which were causing poor print quality,i get an error message ...ink cartridges cannot be recognized. i am using after market cartridges, but have used them before with no issues....

Head cleaning procedure consumes a lot of ink. Ink level counter run too. So, after some head cleaning ink level counter reach zero level (ink out/empty level). Ink tank can not use again even there are ink at tank actually, because chip reach zero level. Reset chip using hardware resetter and you can refill ink tank.

Epson stylus cx8400 cannot recognize ink cartridges

I had the same problem except it would not recognize any of the ink cartridges. I kept hitting the OK button over and over again with the same cartridges in place not removing them at all and it finally recognized them. Decided to go to maintenance on the printer to do a test, and it went right back to not recognizing the cartridges. So i pressed the OK button over and over again until it finally recognized all the cartridges again, but this time i did not try and go into the maintenance to do a test run. Plugged it up to the computer and it has been working ever since. So press the OK button until it recognizes the cartridges, and run no tests on it is what my solution was for the problem. Really is a pain but it works now.

I have an Epson CX8400 printer and I just installed new ink cartridges (genuine Epson)all four and I get the error message "cannot recognize ink cartridges".

Try the following:

1. double check the part numbers of the cartridges and also their expiration date.
2. reseat the cartridges
3. after you place the cartridges back, close the scanner part and press and release the stop button.
4. If same issue, either an issue with the cartridge(s) involved or the printer itself

Hope this help

Ink

Remove and Install Cartridges Be sure you have your replacement cartridges handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones. Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability. 1. Turn on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series. If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen. If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until the cartridge needs replacement. If you’re replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select Change Ink Cartridge and press OK. 2. Open the scanner. 3. Open the cartridge cover. 4. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it. Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. 5. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.) 6. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge. 7. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge. Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak. 8. Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 9. Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, close the cartridge cover and push it down until it clicks into place. 10. Close the scanner. 11. Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes. When you see a completion message on the LCD display screen, ink charging is finished. Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series while ink is charging or you’ll waste ink.
If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.

If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and dust and store it in the same environment as the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series with the label facing upward. Note that there is a valve in the ink supply port, making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to prevent the ink from staining items that the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area, and do not store the cartridge upside down.

If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge, you cannot reinstall and use the cartridge.
