The drain line flow control may be plugged. If this plugs the softener will not do anything. Pull the drain line off (depending on the model year) the flow control is either inside the elbow or inside where the drain elbow attaches. Clean it all out and reinstall. It probably has some debris in it.

I have a sears water softner 625.393760. the water is going straight out the drain when I turn the water on.

The softener model may be programmed to back-flush or do a resin bed recharge as an initialization step when first turned on. Back-flush lasts around 15 minutes. Recharge may take up to 1 hour. During this time, softener should let water bypass the resin bed. After the softener completes this step, it will automatically route water through the resin bed to create softened water.

Water Softener is 1 month old. Salt water up to the 4 mark after recharge cycle. How much brine (volume, please) is supposed to be drawn out of the salt tank upon recharging?

it depends on the concentration you have set in the controls if you set it to a high percentage ( hard water) it will draw out about 40 lirs of salt water
That is to say , if you have the reservoir filled to the overflow hole before , then it will empty the reservoir and may require you to fill it so that it keeps sucking until it finishes the setting time
there will be volumes setting in the user hand book that you adjust to for the hardness of the water

My water softener was recharging and will not stop running water into my sub pump. It ran for hours.

Most water softeners have default settings installed in the software so a reset should correct the is normal for these units to go through a long recharge cycle every 30 days.the sub pump is for overflow and a safety precaution against flooding.have you tried unplugging the unit overnight...then put in the correct time and click through those presets as if you are installing for the first time it will pump into sub chamber if you don't complete the parameter settings to the point the display has cycled through all settings.if this still persists then it may be possible your equipment received a lighting thunderstorm surge.also check that the pressure is not over 5 bars as this will cause other problems.

My softener is a Culligan Mark 89. Water looks clear but is real salty. I bypassed the system and purged the lines to get rid of the taste.

Call Culligan for service. You have a serious problem as it sounds like your resin bed is not going through the backwash cycle before returning to operate mode.

Normally when your water softener goes through a recharge cycle, a solenoid operates to bypass the system while brine (extremely salty water) is drawn into the resin tank to perform the ion exchange process. This is a timed process. Once it completes then your softener switches into backwash mode where the resin bed is flushed with clear water. Finally at the end of the recharge cycle the softner switches back into normal operation.

This is not something that you can fix yourself. Contact Culligan immediately.

Need a manual for a culligan mark 89 water softener, It's not a digital, it's a dial type settings.

Here is a the link for the MK 89 Use and Care Guide

If you are looking for a parts manual that may be almost impossible as they are very protected.

I have had salt in for 3 weeks culligan mark 89 is not recharging

If the unit will recharge then you might have what is called a salt bridge in the tank. The salt is stuck above the water level in the salt tank. Poor a gallon of water over the top of the salt and see if you can then break it up. The salt should go down then.

My mark 812 water softener just lets the water run out into the drain cant stop it unless I shut the water off

sometimes the heads go bad on those and they get stuck in a regeneration cycle that just flushes the tank out. put it on bypass or call your softner maker and alot of times they will help you diagnose it and send you replacement parts. also some of the softner heads use small electric motors that get siezed as well

Have a 30yr. old mark 20 culligan water softner which still works

You should not have to adjust the brine setting. Just the days per week. The salt dosage is dependent on the capacity. If you cut back on the days used you will still need to use the same amount of sodium to regenerate the softener.
