Question about Philips 50PP9202 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

The convergence doesn't stay put

I am able to adjust the convergence so that everything looks proper, but the convergence slowly deteriorates back to the poor condition it was.
When looking at the manual convergence screen with the many plus signs, the two vertical columns on the left are skewed badly. The rest are fine.
Happens every time. Fix 'em, then they're bad within an hour.

How to reset factory defaults

I will presume you have the model listed here and have the Mitsubishi remote in working condition.

These sets have 3 hidden menus: Adjustment (stay out of that one), Convergence, and the OPTION MENU.

The option menu is the one you would want--it requires that you turn set on--enter a 4 digit number that is model specific.

In the option menu you can do a HARD reset which puts everything except convergence back to factory (that is stored in another area).

The reset puts all settings back to factory--set will come on once done on channel 3 in air band etc.

Let me know model number here is or is not correct and I will give you a link to the service manual with page number to look at---explains how to do the reset. Not a bad idea to save that manual as it contains all kinds of good info on this set.

Have a Sony KP-65WV600, already replaced d board once, and replaced convergence ic's once also. Now as soon as I turn unit on, turns to red screen and shuts off, video that is, audio works ok, noticed...

Check High voltage Block. After replacing ic's (STK convergence ic's) you need to adjust Black&White scale.Turn ALL screen adjustments to min.Turn TV on and adjust screen slowly for each gun (I would start with Red first ) when you came to point that you see red background with white lines across, at that point G2 is too high (that will cause TV to shut down, don't worry just lowered adjustment and turn tv back on) so adjust to proper voltage and do the same for each gun. After that, adjust focus for each gun (again all controls are on High Voltage Block and HVB is mounted on front of your tv after you take speaker gril out) black box with 6 controls' screen RGB, focus RGB .
You should do that in dark room in order to get perfect Black&White scale, when all guns are adjusted properly you will see grey picture.Make sure 'Color" adjustment on your display is down to 0. Another step is convergence adjustment ,Flash Focus etc.If TV stil shuts off after all, your Red picture tube is short inside, take crt pcb from tube, make sure TV is unpluged from power before that, and turn Tv on .If stays On tube need replacment...good luck)

Red color is out of adjustment

The convergence circuit on these sets uses a digital correction signal sent through amplifiers (also known as convergence ICs) to electronically correct the convergence. If you can adjust the convergence with the remote and everything moves as it should then it is likely not the convergence ICs at fault. It is likely the digital convergence unit (DCU) that is not storing your setting. If you find one of the colors won't adjust or move properly to your satisfaction then it is likely one of the convergence ICs and possibly some resistors as well that need changing.
This is not really a DIY project.

The red projector pulls away from the center and drops six inches

The convergence output IC responsible for red probably has bad solder connections on it's pins. However, resoldering it will only be a temporary fix. To repair this set properly both of the convergence output IC's need to be replaced.

Everything has a blue and yellow ring around it

Hello lomain,

I posted this for another person, but it fits your situation so here are my suggestions:

This is not a bad tube it is a convergence problem. Your convergence amplifiers are malfunctioning, and need to be replaced. If you have a background in electronics, you can remove the back of the TV locate the Convergence ICs (using the schematic or service manual) and the order the parts you will need which are the two convergence ICs and the biasing resistors (you will see these on the schematic). To remove them unsolder the pins, unscrew the screws holding them on the heat sink and remove them carefully, if they stick use a solvent to break down the adhesion of the heat sink paste. Once loose, take them out and then unsolder the biasing resistors and replace them with the ones you ordered along with the ICs.

To install the new ICs put heat sink paste on the back of the ICs and insert the pins into the proper holes in the circuit board. Screw the screws back in securely, and solder the connections back.

After doing this you will need to perform a convergence adjustment, using the cross hair adjustment screen (access this from your TV menu). and the you will need to do an advance adjustment using the crosshatch pattern (also accessed from your TV menu).

Once these are done use you service manual to follow the procedures on locking the adjustments into the TVs memory.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Hey guys I have a pretty interesting one for you. I researched all the convergence issues a few months ago, and new I needed to buy new IC's. I bought the C5AA00000203's from Partstore.com, which were...

Bad IC is my guess...

On anotehr note convergence is a very common failure on Projection TV sets.
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You can see some example photos and find a solution here...

ALOT OF BLUE ON THE SCREEN!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Problem with Samsung TV

SAMSUNG Convergence Problem

It looks like blue convergence. Look at menu, select convergence and see if blue top is bent down on convergence adjust screen. Probably won’t adjust.

Some Samsungs have convergence IC’s on a separate convergence board in the back of the TV. Others have the IC’s mounted on the main deflection board. Either way the board has to be removed to get at the dud IC’s and associated burnt resistors.

You remove the appropriate board, determine if any resistors are burnt or damaged, replace any burnt or out of tolerance resistors, replace 1 or 2 IC's and re-install the board.

Now you have to adjust it to look like new.

If the unit has not been misadjusted and everything is OK now, running the auto focus may put the picture back to it’s previous stunning quality, as it was before IC failed.

If after self or autofocus it is still misadjusted noticeably, try the customer convergence adjustments. Operators’ manuals are available on web through searching.

If convergence can not be adjusted properly, you messed up chip install or resistors may be wrong value or open; or it needs major adjustment.

Or try to the find the repairperson part of this website (on the Homepage) and search postal code. Maybe you will be lucky and someone from your area is listed for Projection TV repair.

Most rookies doing this job will cause damage and not be successful. They will pay double for someone to fix their mess or end up scrapping the TV. It is not a simple task. It is more difficult than batteries on a remote.

Good Luck
