Fan does not shut off unless unplugged

My Kenmore Microwave # 721.80019401 has a fan vent that does not shut off.  The only way to turn it off is to turn off the breaker or unplug it.  From what I have found in talking to technicians it is a control panel issue.  These microwaves have automatic fans that turn on if the stove below gets to hot.  In my case, it never shut off after it turned on.
My options are buy a new microwave and have it installed or find someone to replace it the control panel.

It may be a shorted triac or relay on the control board, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a
    week or so.

But it may be as simple as a shorted hood vent fan thermostat, if so equipped.

This is something that's pretty simple for you or a friend to check with a multimeter / test meter or continuity checker.

First, make sure the oven is unplugged.

Then you can remove the control panel assembly. At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

    There
should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
    behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

If you find yours but you can't or don't want to do the test, you can
send us a copy so we can see if yours has one. (If yours does not have
the thermostat, the problem is on the control board).

You can scan the "schematic" or "wiring diagram" page of the mini-manual at 200-300 DPI and e-mail it to us at [email protected], or fax it (in "detail" or "superfine" mode) toll-free to 866-481-2802 and include your contact info.

If you decide to send your control panel assembly in for repair, we
really need the entire control panel assembly - the plastic control
panel frame, keypad, circuit board(s) and display - as shown in the
    attached sample photo.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your
full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

    We're happy
to help you. Once we have all your information and
offer a final solution, we'd appreciate your
    thoughtful rating of our answer.

Since your circuit breaker is blowing instead of the fuse, the odds are that you have a door switch, door switch mount or door hinge alignment issue.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can probably find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number here at the Sears parts site.

There is also a chance that the high voltage capacitor is shorted.

Here is a link you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

SOURCE: Kenmore 721 microwave fan turns on by itself

I have the exact same problem with my Kenmore Microwave model 721 that we bought in October of 2005. The Fan will just randomly turn itself on even when we are not cooking. It has been doing this for the last few months and is starting to become more frequent. There is no way to turn it off except to unplug it for several hours.
Was there a recall for this defect ?

Amana 10D microwave fan stays on, doesn't shut off until unit is unplugged and re-plugged.

If the fan in your Amana 10D microwave stays on and doesn't shut off until the unit is unplugged and re-plugged, there could be an issue with the fan motor or the control board. Here are some things to try:
1. Check to make sure the vent is clear and unobstructed. If the vent is blocked, it can cause the fan to stay on.
2. Check the fan motor. The fan motor is responsible for turning the fan on and off. If it is faulty, it can cause the fan to stay on continuously.
3. Check the control board. The control board is responsible for controlling the functions of the microwave, including the fan. If it is faulty, it can cause the fan to stay on or not function properly.
If none of these solutions fix the issue, it is possible that there is a problem with the microwave itself. In this case, it is recommended to contact a professional appliance repair service for further assistance.

Have Kenmore microvave and the vent starts on its own

Actually, that's a feature! If you cook much on the range (stove) beneath the microwave, the heat will cause the microwave bottom to heat up quite a bit (just touch it!), and the microwave will turn on it's exhaust fan in an attempt to save itself from burning up. It will shut off in about 15 minutes after you turn off the source of heat.
But if the fan comes on by itself even when the microwave is cool (or at least not hot), then you probably have a defective fan thermostat. This thermostat is located behind the control console on the inside bottom of the microwave.

My microwave oven model 721.85033111 vent fan stays on

You probably have a bad fan thermostat. This thermostat is supposed to turn on the vent fan if the microwave oven gets too hot (caused by cooking too much or having too many burners turned on on the range beneath the microwave oven). It should shut off in about 15 minutes after your turn off the range burners. But if it comes on for no reason, or won't turn off, then You probably have a bad fan thermostat.

I hane a Galaxy over the range microwave model # 721.80002401. The problem is the fan randomly turns on and will not go off unless I unplug it.

May be a defective fan switch or the unit is detecting some heat there--not likely to be a do it yourself repair--consider having a shop look at it for you---

Kenmore microwave fan won't shut off

The fan is required when the microwave is running, cools the magnetron. The problem may be in one of the interlock door switches, it is to complicated to go through the steps and the testing requirements, plus the alignment is critical.

GE spacemaker Profile XL1800 vent fan will not shut off

It may be a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel, such as a sticky relay.

I would suspect a sticky relay first, but the door switches should be checked.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

If you need your control panel assembly (smart board) repaired, we do that for $39.95 nationwide.
