Sony Handycam Dig 8 doesn't recognize tape when trying to record

I have a Sony Digital Handycam DCR-TRV140 NTSC

In camera mode, it does not recognize the tape when trying to record.

However, in video mode, it will fast forward, play, rewind, etc.

Thanks for your assistance!!!

If it has memory stick, Make sure your memory stick is in. Your memory stick is full. Delete the unwanted pictures from the memory stick or use a differnt biger memory stick.

I looked in the manual. It seems your camcorder does not have a slot for memory stick. But you may still save pictures on the tape. Here is the link to download the manual

Please read Page 40 "recording picture on the tape".

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem and the sony tech guy walked me through it. First check that the tape is not in the "locked" position and will allow recording (you can also use new tape). Next, remove the baterry and place the switch on either VCR or Camera mode and wait for 2 to 3 minutes for all of the residual power in the camera to dissipate. Return the switch to the "off" position and reinstall the battery. Now, open the lid of the casette compartment and press the reset button using a pen or pencil tip. The button is small and is about half an inch to the right of the eject button. This worked for me.
If this does not work there may be something internally wrong and SONY will fix it for a flat rate of $171.00 which includes ALL internal parts replaced (left "like new") and shipping back to you. You will have to pay shipping to Sony. It also includes a 90-day warranty and takes less than 12 days turn-around time. Phone number for sony is (800) 488- 7669. Hope this helps you. Good Luck.

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

daer
this error C:31:23 is related to the s reel and this occurs only when the tension of the tape is more,
solution:
1 st try to change the tape
if the problem persists then u need to take it to the service center as the tape path of the mechanical section is to be adjusted
as you are telling that your camcorder is not showing remaining time (time code ) then head assy. also need to be cleaned ..try to use cleaning tape for 10 sec. not more then that .

Nothing happens when I turn on the camera - message C:31:23

This error usually comes when there is some mechanical fault instead of the electronic one. Maybe the gears are jammed. Try it at your own risk:
I found this on another discussion forum. Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times. Surprisingly it worked for me..

Black and white playback with sony handycam dcr-hc20

There is no problem on your camera, DCR-HC19E is PAL system(European system) DCR-HC20 is NTSC(American system). Are you in US or Europe? I think your TV is NTSC, cause the tape recorded on DCR-HC19E you played has no color. To confirm, connect your HC20 to TV in camera mode, not recording yet, just look at the TV as your monitor, If its in color, no problem, just erase the old video recorded on the HC19E, but if its important to you, you can convert it to NTSC using a PC. thanks
