You may not want to remove the Ice Maker Cover if the problem is that the ice maker is jammed and will not make ice. Looking at the number of complaints on the internet, this seems to be a design flaw in the system. I too have a Whirlpool SXS and the Ice Maker jams from time to time. The problem seems to be that the made ice is released by the heated tray and the moist ice (from the heating) has to slide down a small ramp into the collector. The moist ice re-freezes on the slide and blocks the ice maker from rotating. My solution is to use a small hair dryer and direct the hot air through the top vents (After removing the storage bin) and under the back of the ice maker. This will re-melt the ice on the ramp and allow it to slide down the ramp. I lowered the temperature on the freezer and this seems to slow down the problem. I have had to do this procedure 3 times in the last year. By the way, the cover comes off with the two Phillips head screws about 4 inches down on each side.

Don't bother. If your icemaker is more than a few years old, it's probably pretty cruddy and needs to be replaced, especially if you have hard water. It's an easy job and you can get OEM replacements for Whirpool from Amazon for less than $100. But before you do, you need to check the diagnostics to make sure the full bucket sensor is working properly. This varies by model, but there is usually a blinking LED in the freezer that tells you what's going on.
