Question about Toshiba 20VL14 20 in. EDTV-Ready LCD Television

Open Question

I have a Toshiba LCD Flatpanel (model 20VL14). it has a normal factory malfunction in the adaptor box (modelTAA-Y58) that shuts down the television completely when it over heats. today i was playing some video games on it. I had shut it down to do something for ten minutes. then when i turned it back on again to play some more, it black screened. only problem is that this time the television is still on! you can hear the audio, but there's no video. i checked if it was the channels, and no matter what input or channel i put it onto, it stays black. i tried unplugging and replugging the adapter, same thing. i tired turning it off and back on. this time, it had a split second of snow before going black screen, and continued that way every time i shut it down then turned it back on. what's the problem, is it fixable? or would i be better off buying a new television?

SOURCE: Flickering tv screen when playing playstation games.

I had a similar problem show up for my Olevia 65" HDTV. I solved it by putting my TV into "game" mode, where it doesn't do any picture correction. Now the game works just fine.

SOURCE: White/Grey screen with non-HD channels

I removed the HDMI cable and connected with component video and rca audio. No more white screen.

Picture quality looks good. I don't know if it's as good as HDMI, but then I don't need to reboot the TV three times to get to teh on-demand menu... Grrrrr....

I am trying to contact Toshiba on this as well. I have seen several reports of this problem on the web.

Note that if it is a backlight inverter board problem you will still have sound. SInce you have no sound I would suspect a power supply or main A/B board malfunction. Do you know how to use a multimeter?

15vac is pretty normal for a laptop battery. Its likely that your laptops power inlet has malfunctioned and no longer is capable of recieving voltage. Besides, your power terminal should be getting 120vac, it's just your adaptor that reduces the voltage to 15-19 vac usuable for laptop batteries. Also your laptop computer is rather an older model, my mother has one and I've worked with it a while. Laptop batteries also don't last forever, It might be wise to move onto a better laptop.

No HDMI input socket on Toshiba 'HD Ready' TV

There is an easy way to adapt the cable.

Any good computer shop will have the adaptor.

Take the HDMI cable to them, and tell them you want an adaptor to go to composite signal.

(I know that they're made, many of the graphics cards I use to build computers come with that cable adaptor)

You also might try Best Buy or Radio Shack, but you might not have much luck with them.

X-box Sounds like it could be a bad inverter board, Toshiba p/n#72001911 and they cost about $35 plus shipping... This is a common failure with this model causing anything from intermittent shutdown to simple loss of video. Get it in the shop and have them check it out. Might also take the part number with you so they don't have to research it... Good Luck Bill
