pull a spark plug out and crank itover to see if theres compression. Or perform a compession test. If you pull the plug out, and turn it over it should blow air our...strong. If it doesn't, look to the timing belt. If it went from running to not running over night, could be that. check the simple things first. fuel, spark, compression, timing, for starters.

Hard to start half to crank 25 to30 times it is discouraging help

few things to check first i would check my compression with a compression guage most small engines wont start easily if it doesnt have atleast 100 psi anything less makes them very hard to start this will also identify if you have leaking valves stuck valves or piston ring problems ect. next check to see if you have a spark. sometimes the spark plug is the culprit but you can check to see if you have a spark sever ways one is to disconnect the spark plug wire and in sert a phillips screw driver in the clip that holds the tip of the sparkplug and hold the well insulated handle and hold the shaft of the screwdriver near the block or head of the engine and pull the starter you should see and or hear a healthy spark. another way is to get a timing light and a 12 volt battery to power the timing light and connect the battery negative to the block of the engine tested clip the sensor lead on the spark plug wire while its still connected to the spark plug and it should flash when you pull the starter rope. or you can get a spark tester a good one has a neon light in it and a ground clip hold the spark tester to the sparkplug wire and it should flash as you crank the engine. if you have compression and spark next check your carb. assuming it has fresh good gasoline with no water in the gas your carb may be gunked up, clogged with trash or stuck float. remove carb and dissasemble starting with the bowl make sure its clean in there and the float and float valve isnt sticking then get a torch tip cleaner and ron the fine cleaning wires in ever orifice you can find. pull the main jet clean the tiny holes in it and spray carb cleaner in the carb body and parts. if it has adjustable jets pull them and clean. use compressed air to clean it out also. do not pull the welch plugs just yet if you do you will have to get a repair kit and takes some skill and patience to replace. reassemble carb carefully make note of were all the parts and pieces come from and replaces them. before removing adjustable jets count how many turns it takes to screw them in and only lightly seat them so when you pull them out you may return them to were they were originally adjusted. there are tiny holes near the butterfly throttle plate in the throat of the carb make sure they are clean and clear. if it is really gunked up there is carb dip but do not soak longer than recommended on the can as it will dissolve brass and ruin your carb. if you still cannot get it to run or run right. you can buy a new carb on ebay recheck valves or just bring the darn thing to a professional. good luck!

Craftsman 42 inch riding mower Model number 917-272751 that wont turn unless I remove the spark plug.

try and jump start it direct to the starter this will test the cables and battery if no change and the starter is good then there could be a problem with the compression release on the camshaft

88 rx7 run but wont start

The FC3S is notorious for this and fueling issues. Check all ground points, battery cables and connections. Check the draw from the starter. If the voltage drops below 10V there is not enough power for the ignition, causing weak spark. It really needs to spin over 200rpm cranking. Pop starting does not necessarily mean the compression is good. You need to make sure it cranks fast enough to get a proper compression test with rotary tester, New NGK plugs, new NGK plug wires.

I have a 2 year old Ryobi RY34440 String trimmer, 30cc. Last year worked fine, this year pull cord is so easy to pull it doesn't even turn engine over. Is is the spark plug?

Either the pull starter is not pulling or you are not getting compression. To check you need to check the spark plug is still snug. If so, remove the plug and put a drinking straw in the hole to touch the piston. Slowly pull the starter to see if the piston is moving. If the piston is moving and the plug was snug then you are losing compression somewhere, like a head gasket. If not moving then the problem most likely is in the starter, and disassembly required to investigate.

If really helpful, please rate.

Poulan Wildthing pull starter problem hard pull; have changed fuel filter; pull starter works with spark plug out, but still hard on the odd pull with starter in?

Many modern saws have sufficient compression to present difficult pulling of the starter cord. Suggest trading in for a saw with a compression release. The only repairable problem with the present saw is if it is flooding the engine and you are trying to compress liquid fuel. You can tell by removing the spark plug and pulling the starter through forcefully--it will blow out raw fuel if it is flooded. Change the diaphragm in the lower carburetor chamber if it is flooded. Hope some of this helps!

Ryobi rcs3535.pull start operates easily when plug removed.when plug is replaced the pull start has so much resistance that turning the engine over requires too much effort and it is extremley jerky.

Remove the spark plug, ignition off, and open the choke and throttle. Turn the saw upside down and pull the starter through vigorously to see if the engine expels any fuel. Replace the plug and see if there is any change. Does the engine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon--remove and clean or replace it. Modern saws seem to have more compression than earlier saws. I have a new, small Husky saw that is equally hard to pull and no compression release. The cure is to sell this one and find a saw with a compression release, or one that is otherwise not so hard to pull through. Good luck!

Car wont start

Hi,
If the engine cranks over normally when you attempt to start you car, but the engine does not start, the problem may be NO FUEL, NO SPARK or NO COMPRESSION. The engine needs adequate fuel pressure, a properly timed spark and normal compression to start.

1) To find why the engine won't start, remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body, push the throttle open and spray a small amount of aerosol starting fluid into the engine. Crank the engine. If it has spark and compression but NO FUEL, it will start and run a few seconds before dying. If it does NOT start, it probably has NO SPARK.

2)Another method to check for spark is to pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug (if it has plug wires, coil-on-plug ignitions do not) and place the open end of the plug wire near a metal surface on the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for a spark. DO NOT hold the wire while doing this as it can shock you. If you see a spark, the problem is not spark, but most likely NO FUEL or NO COMPRESSION. If you do not see a spark, the problem is in the IGNITION CIRCUIT.

3)Proper fuel pressure is critical for fuel injected engines to start and run. You should hear the fuel pump inside the fuel tank buzz for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on (no buzz means the pump is not running and the engine is not getting fuel). You can smell the tailpipe for gasoline vapors after cranking the engine. If you smell gas, the problem is likely not fuel but NO SPARK. You can also remove the plastic cap and press the schraeder valve test fitting on the fuel rail to see if there is any fuel pressure to the engine (not a very accurate test because fuel pressure must be at a certain level for the engine to start, for that you need a gauge). Even so, no fuel at the fuel rail would tell you fuel is not getting to the engine..

Thank you !!

Have the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure there is enough power in it. Sounds like it's strong enough to turn the motor with no compression (spark plug removed) but too weak to turn the motor with compression. Also check for loose or corroded wires.
