If you are dealing with the voicemail icon that will not go away I have found (on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and S3) that you can get rid of it by stopping a certain application. On my device (under settings > Application Manager > All) there are 3 applications called "Phone". Stopping the last of the three in this list (Middle in size at 116kb) makes that icon go away without any other problems that I have noticed. To do this click on the application and then click "Force Stop".
I figured out which one to stop by "force stopping" each one to see which one did the trick. Then I rebooted the phone and only stopped the one that worked.
You will have to do this every time you reboot your phone.
