Most people buy the largest one they can find. It comes on, cools the room quickly and then shuts off. This is exactly what you don't want to happen because it does nothing to solve the humidification problem that is usually more of a problem than the temperature. Buy a smaller air condition that will come on and remain on for an extended period. It will remove the moisture from the room and make the air more comfortable. It will also draw less power and typically operate quieter since the compressor and fans are smaller. Of course it all depends on where you live... if you are in the desert, then humidity probably isn't the issue....

SOURCE: 4 ton HVAC Unit for 2000 SQ FT Residential Bldg (Single Story)

One ton of cooling per 500 square feet of space assuming you have good insulation. Yes, 4 tons for 2000 feet would be accurate.

SOURCE: I need a master control

Without the Model Number, it's hard to know what knob fits your model. However, the link below, may provide some help. But, having the Model Number would be a bulls eye. Remove the front of the AC unit. There may be a manufacturer's data plate inside, which would provide the model number.

Hope this helps you.

My landlord installed this brand new out of the box. Our apt is 900 sq ft tops. This unit can't even cool down our living room and kitchen. If the whole 2 bedroom apt is 900 sq ft, you can imagine how...

The AC your landlord installed is rated at 8000 btu which is way too small for 900 sq ft. You need at least a 15000 Btu Air conditioner and a 'well insulated' house to be cool.
A good rule of thumb in the AC business says you need 1 ton (12000 btu) of Air conditioning for every 600 sq feet (if the house is well insulated) - if not - then you will need 1 ton (12000 btu) for every 400 sq feet.
So, if you have 900 sq feet and the house is well insulated you should have at least a 15000 btu unit.
If it's not well insulated you will need 24,000 btu.

Need window air conditioner to fit window 23" wide. Studio apartment main room is 13'X17' with kitchen 6'x17' and walk-in closet and bath 5'x17'. Would like a kenmore and quiet while in operation.

Hi; Try purchasing an up right portable ac unit. Then all you need to do is vent the hot air tube out a convienant window or dryer duct. Needs to be at least 12,OOO BTU. I size my installs to 400 sq. ft. per ton(12,000 btu)

There are more factors than sq ft. You have to factor in window surface and R factor of insulation.

Amps needed to run a central air unit

Central air requires a 2 pole 30 amp breaker or fuse. You may be able to get by without it but 200 amp service is recommended.
