George adjust the valves to .004-.008 on each valve and you will be up and running. You can find Kawasaki parts at a dealer like www.arcolawn.com

set piston to tdc compression stroke then run it down the bore a 1/4 inch

set the tappetts to inlet the bottom valve ( alloy push rod ) to a tightish 0.004" and set the
ex valve the top one ( steel push rod ) to 0.005"

setting at 1/4 pst tdc eliminates decompressor from upsetting valve clearance seting

Which valve is intake top or bottom


Don't know what tractor,you are referring to. Usually the intake valve is made of aluminum,and mounted on the bottom. The exhaust valve is made of steel and located at the exhaust port. This is for a Craftsman tractor,with a Briggs & Stratton engine. This is i suppose,must be like most tractor engines. The exhaust valve must be made os steel,do to the heat. The intake vale is made of aluminum,it is not subjected to such high temperature. Sincerely,Brad Locke

What is the proper procedure for adjusting the intake and exhaust vales


You have to pull the rear (muffler end) cover, rear muffler protector (the metal vent), the rear handle, the lower end plate, and the fiber muffler protector so you have access to the head cover. Remove the head cover, disconnecting the breather tube as you do it.
Turn the engine (using pull handle) to top dead center compression (both valves fully closed). Use feeler gauge to check the valve clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem.
Intake should be .15mm +/- .02mm (.006in +/- .001)
Exhaust should be .20mm +/- .02mm (.008in +/- .001)
Adjust as needed by loosening the rocker arm pivot locking nut and adjusting the rocker arm pivot. Tighten the locking nut once set.
Put it all back together. :)

One opens the intake vales and the other opens the exhaust valves. they are made so you cannot install them in reverse

The valve gap is 0.003 - 0.005 for intake
exhaust gap 0.005 - 0.007

Valve maintenance is in sections 6 and 12 with some comments in section 1.

I have a 1993 suzuki katana 600, it has high km's. the valves make alot of noise, people say to do re torque the valves, would you know how tight I sould torque them too?


Either your friends are playing with you or they have no idea at all what they are talking about. There is no such thing as a re-torque of the valves. The valves are not screwed or bolted in place. How can you torque a screw or bolt that does not exist? The valve gap , aka valve lash, may need to be reset but no torque on the valves is possible. If resetting the valves, set the gap at .006 intake and .011 exhaust. There will be a lock nut, (not shown in diagram), on each of the adjuster screws. Your bike has two exhaust valves and two intake valves per cylinder. tombones49_184.gif

ENGINE WONT IDLE POPPING BACK THRU BREATHER


From your short description, you might be looking at a stuck exhaust valve or broken valve spring.
What happens is the valve that opens above the cylinder to allow the exhaust gasses to escape may be shut, so when the intake vale opens to allow the gas in - and the spark plug ignites it - the explosion is forced back up the intake system (instead of out the exhaust), making the popping noise you're hearing.
Whatever the case, it could be a few related things - all not good. Looks like a trip to shop is needed.

just to get it started?? i would set the points at half the plug gap, about 14 to 17 thou, intake valves at 14 and exhaust at 17, these are rough figures, once the engine is hot if the valves are noisy, wait for engine to cool and reduce gap 1 or 2 thou and try again, these are just numbers i would use when in need, good luck

If you are refering the valve lash clearance or gap the exhaust gap is .010" - .012" and the intake is .008" - .012 ".

Good Day
Vale clearance cold
intake .006 in (.15 mm)
exhaust .010 in (.25 mm)

Timing
1. With transmission in Neutral or park, start engine and warm to normal operating temp. turn eng,and all accessories off. connect Tachometer. Connect timing light to no 1 spark plug wire.

2. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister purge hose and EGR vacuum hose. Start and ensure idle is 900 RPM. adjust idle as required. Check ignition timing ( 12 @ 900)

3. If adjustment is required, loosen distributor hold down bolt and turn until timing is within specification. Tighten distributor hold down bolt and recheck timing. adjust idle speed as required.
