The left-hand side of the Ball of my Dyson DC40 rolls, but wants to stick. We've inspected everything, and nothing is stuck on the Ball. What's happening? We have had it for less than a month.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC40's ball shell. This sounds unusual as it has a double ball-bearing axle and should roll smoothly in use.

To find out what's causing this we'd need to take you through some quick troubleshooting checks when you have your machine to hand.

If you can call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1-866-693-9766 (US), our experts will be happy to help further. If your machine happens to need a repair, we can also confirm if this is covered under your vacuum's 5-year warranty.

We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Jack

Changing the belt

Always make sure your machine is unplugged from the outlet before replacing the belt.
Newer Oreck uprights have an access plate on the right hand side of the base (as you're looking at it from the front). Remove the one screw from the access plate and slide it forward. Snake the new belt around the brush roll pulley and then strrrrrrretch it back to the motor shaft. Replace the access plate.
If your model does not have an access plate; turn the machine upside down, Remove all screws. Lift the bottom plate off. Observe the position of the brush roll ends, One side of each end cap will have several notches cut into it,this is the 'new' side, the other side is smooth, this is the 'old' side. You can reposition the brush roll the the 'old' side if your bristles appear worn down.
With the brush roll still removed; place one end of the belt over the motor shaft first, place the other side of the belt around the brush roll pulley and stretch the brush roll forward until it is back in place.
Spin the brush roll by hand before replacing the cover to ensure the belt is not pinched.
Replace to cover.

My Bissell Dirtlifter Powerbrush carpet cleaner will not roll. The back wheels roll fine, but when you put the machine down flat, the front part (where the roller is) sticks and will not roll.

I had the same problem. It would pull backwards but not go forward. A closer examination revealed the clear plastic part on the bottom in the very front of the machine had popped loose on one side.
If you look at the front of the machine, there is the clear plastic part on top where you see the dirty water being sucked up. The bottom half that creates the channel for the vacuum is where it came loose. It wouldn't create enough suction to draw the water up either. By taking out the two screws that hold the top part in place and removing it, I was able to snap the bottom back in. Works fine now. Hope this helps.

I have a self propelled Royal Dirt Devil vacuum model number 087900 and it goes backward fine but forward has to be pushed so hard it's impossible. Is this a switch? Do you know about how much the part...

You might try a new belt and/or brush roll. The brush roll is what helps pull a vacuum forward, the power drive helps, but if the brush isn't turning like it should, then it will hinder forward motion. The belt may look ok, but they stretch to the point that under load they won't drive the brush roll.

Wheels won't engage

Sounds like the outer window noozle isn't seated with the inner window. Take out the two screws, one on each side, remove the window, inspect the other half moon window to make sure it is ok, then reinstall the outer window(don't forget the gasket that sits on top of this window)Try to see if you still have a problem.

Self propel will go foward, but will not reverse. Seems like handle is all the way extended.

There is a cable that connects to the handle and goes down to the powerdrive transmission. It is visible at the actuator arm on the drive if you look at the bottom of the handle where it pivots on the main housing. It will be on the right hand side, front corner of the handle bottom. You should be able to see the cable connected to the arm of the drive and will move back and forth with the top handle. Sometimes, they break at this connection. The cable may be frayed and broken, or the acuator arm may be broken where the cable connects.
This could also be a simple worn belt problem. The roller is always rotating in a direction that pulls the machine forward and if the belt is worn, the roller will turn sluggishly but still enough to pull forward, but the belt also drives the transmission and a worn belt will not have the capacity to overcome the forces involved to propel the machine backwards. Always change the belt(s) yearly.(on average)

If the belt is not turning the brush roll, then it could be different reasons. One is, is the switch in the handle ok, then there is a brush roll motor, 2 other circ. boards, one by the brush roll motor and the other behind the tool holder. I would look at the switch in the handle 1st, then go from there.
