SOURCE: lawn mower troubles

You must first remove the cover assembly which houses the starter pulley. Pull the old rope completely out until it no longer moves. Hold the starter pulley and remove the old rope. Try to wind the starter pulley spring tighter if possible. DON'T LET GO. The starter rewind spring must be wound before installing the new rope. After winding the spring, thread the new rope through the cover and into the hole in the pulley. Tie a good knot in the end and let the rope wind slowly into the housing. Once you have this done, replace the cover, get the proper length of rope, thread it through the handle, tie a knot in this end and your ready to go.

SOURCE: Diagram for Lawn tractor instalation belt has many manuals for yard machines/mtg lawn tractors.
The information you need may be generic and therefore almost any manual may help re-install the belt. This manual is for the 660-679 series. Once at the site you can check different model numbers for one that may be closer to the machine you have.

Good luck,

Need valve lash setting

.004 to .006 on both intake and exhaust. Keep in mind it has a compression release on the cam shaft exhaust valve side so if it is to tight it will not allow the exhaust valve to shut and will burn out with time as well as power reduction. Too loose will make it hard to turn the engine over, sounds like a low battery. I have had two of the Intec engines that the stud that the rocker arm pivots on pulled out of the engine head a little at a time and drove me crazy until it finally pulled all the way out. I would adjust on Mon, Wen, Fri .

Order new Rocker Cover gasket for your Engine Code located at top of motor nameplate)
Drain Oil. 3 pints SAE 30
Remove OHV rocker cover 4 bolts carefully and remove rocker cover and toss old gasket. Clean rocker cover with a clean rag and set aside. Fetch standard feeler guage which has a .003" and a .005" available.
Exaust valve .005" is the top one and Intake .003" is the bottom.
First check the gap between the rocker arm and valve tip.
If they need adjusting then you will need star driver to slightly loosen the center star screw then use a 10mm or 3\8 ( i think )
To slighty adjust the outter bolt until its almost tight to feeler guage then at same time while holding the outside bolt, tighten the stardrive center until tight. It will still pull it in a bit is why I say "almost tight".
You will need to reinstall new OHV rocker gasket around the rocker pan, set the top 2 bolts to help align and you might need to shift the rocker cover upward while bolt it down so the bottom edge is high enough onto motor. Do not over tighten. Aluminum is soft. You may use some "weakest" loc-tite product but I never do.

My 24 hp 42 inch craftsman lawn tractor starts fine but continually backfires when running, plugs are dry and carbon free, air filter clean, any ideas on what I can do?

Yes I would figure out who made the motor, B&S, Kawasaki, Kohler, Tecumseh are common. Go to their website, find your engine model number and get the valve clearances. Find a mechanical person in the neighborhood, avoid brothers-in-law, and give him a 12 pack of beer to adjust the valves for you. I think you will find your mower runs way better, backfiring will be gone. After 100 hours or 3 or so years you will note most of those companies recommend an adjustment. You most likely have a 2 cylinder and there are two small rocker covers near the spark plugs, Pull off the covers and the rockers will be exposed. Adjusting the gap between the rocker and the valve takes some skill and understanding of where the pistons are in relationship to the valve train and doing it wrong can be expensive. I know there are many videos on youtube if you want to take it on yourself.

Runs fine when blades not engaged, engaging blades causes engine speed to be reduced. Engine speed increases to normal when blades not engaged, or when motor not moving. Sounds as if mowing through very...

If it has a B&S engine, and many do, try this. Remove one spark plug at a time and start the engine. If it runs with one plug, but not the other, then you have a dead cylinder. That is why it seems to run OK so long as no load is on it.

I have had 2 different mowers with B&S engines which bent the valve push rods on the left (as the driver sits) side of the engine causing the problem you speak of. And if you google this issue you will find that I am not the only person who ever had this scenario.

If you have the OHV type engine you can pull off the little valve cover, next to the spark plug, and see the rocker arms and the push rods behind them. Replacing them is about as easy as it looks, however setting the gap between the top of the valve and the rocker is best left to someone who knows what they are doing.

Timing 17.5 hp mower

i don't think it's a timing issue, i think the valves need to be adjusted a little tighter - if the rocker arms are too loose, the valves don't open enough and compression builds up, fighting against the starter

Push rod loose

Very possible that the valve is stuck open and piston could have hit valve causing it to bend at the head. This would cause valve not to close completely. Would have to remove head and remove valve and most likely replace intake valve.
