I purchased the the ram that the Toshiba site (this is a laptop, not my HP) spec sheet listed. But I can live with it may still be incompatable...but it still won't boot after removing the new ram....

  • bama_red764 Jun 23, 2009

All the lights on the keyboard come on... I hear a "click" sound through the speakers, powering up.... but a black screen. Forgive my ignorance... MO.BO???

    Thank you for helping!!!!!

  • bama_red764 Jun 24, 2009

I'm just not sure... doesn't SOUND like it's booting up at all. It's getting power...black screen, tho. I accessed the ram through a back panel... should not have affected anything else.

  • bama_red764 Jun 24, 2009

I'll try again... should I put only the original one in... not bother with the new one at all?

  • bama_red764 Jun 24, 2009

OMG I am so stupid! Nevermind guys!!! I am ashamed to report that I merely had not seated the modules in far enough. I just freaked when it didn't come on.....

Thank you ALL so much for jumping in there and being SOOO helpful!!

Obviously the ram is not compatible. Put the original ram back in and buy the correct ram.

Make sure that you have it in all the way. try removing it and see if the trouble goes way. if the ram is not all the way in it will prevent your computer from booting.

SOURCE: HP a305w Won't Boot Up With New Ram

That should support the two 512s you installed. Try each stick one at a time to verify you don't have a bad stick.

Upgraded ram 1gb wont boot hp 510 mobo 30C4

If you added another 512Mb RAM to increase the RAM to 1Gb then the new 512Mb memory stick could be incompatible with the original 512Mb or it could be faulty.
Use RAM that is same make and speed as the original RAM.
Remove both RAM and just insert the new 512Mb into your laptop and see if the laptop boots up, if not then the RAM could be faulty.

Had 512mb ram installed in each slot and one day just stopped reading one of the slots. Checked BIOS and only detected 512mb, reset defaults and same issue. Checked RAM and both are fine. removed the 512mb...

Your motherboard is quite old. It could be the RAM slot is simply dirty(use canned air), but if that's the case, the PC doesn't boot. The memory controller could be dying(replace motherboard or upgrade system). There could be other issues but it sounds like your memory itself is fine.

You could try reinstalling the BIOS, but because of the age of your computer, you shouldn't spend any money trying to get it fixed. It would probably be cheaper just to get a compatible used motherboard on eBay as replacement. The better long term financial decision would have to be building either a used parts PC (because CPUs have barely gotten better in the last 5 years) or a brand new system.

This isn't very much information to draw on, so if you can update your information, I can help more.

About my ram of p4m800-m7 rev 3.1 i have a 512mb ram already installed and i buy a new ram with a 1gb size and i would like to install it but my question is is it okay to put them together? my 512mb ram is...

The black rectangular chips on the side, or sides, of the ram module are DRAM chips. Dynamic Random Access Memory.

('Chip' is slang term to denote IC, or Integrated Circuit)

Each Dram chip is of a specific size, (or can be said as Amount)
There are manufacturers who make the Dram chips, and then the chips are used by the ram memory manufacturer.

Doesn't matter how the Dram chips are arranged. The ram memory manufacturer could put them all of one side, if they designed it that way.

1.Your motherboard will support, (Use), DDR at 333Mhz, or DDR at 400MegaHertz.
(PC2700 and PC3200, respectively)

2.The ram memory module must use 2.5 Volts.
(JEDEC has set the voltage standard for DDR Sdram at 2.5 Volts, so no worries here. Only time to check this, is if you have some High performance ram, that may be set to use a higher voltage)

3.It must be Non-ECC ram, and Unbuffered.

4.Cas Latency should be 2.5 to 3.0 (Ram Timings)

Short solution?

Computer off, and unplugged from power. TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case to relieve your body of Static.

Handle the ram 'sticks' by the body of the stick, and refrain from touching the gold plated contact pins, on the bottom.

If the 512MB stick is in SLOT 1, remove it. Install the 1GB stick in Slot 1. Make SURE it is seated!

(Slot 1, is the ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor. It is the first ram memory slot that the Processor reads)

Leave the computer case open. (Refrain from putting your hands in while the computer is plugged into power)

Plug the computer into power. Wait 30 seconds. Turn the computer on.

Computer boots up? (Starts)
Okay.
Unplug from power. Install the 512MB stick in Slot 2.
Plug into power, wait 30 seconds. Turn the computer on.
Computer boots up?
You're good to go.

1GB ram memory stick is in Slot 1, and the computer does not boot up?
Incompatible ram memory. Remove it. Reinstall the original 512MB stick in Slot 1.
