SOURCE: EKG question
There is no difference. EKG is the earlier name and is so called because the guy who invented it was German and the spelling was ElectrokKrdiogGam. EKG was decided to be the universal term because ECG (ElectroCardioGram) sounded too similar to EEG (electroencephalogram). They thought calling it EKG would then decrease any confusion.

Recently, the USA government approved the first pocket-sized EKG machine, so small that it promises easier, faster heart measurements in ambulances, the emergency room - even a possible heart attack victim's bedroom. This devices are already avaliable on special stores and on the internet and usually reffered to as "handheld EKG machine". The most common one is called "ReadMyHeart".

Hello Josh. You will need a EKG simulator. I suggest you contact your local community (junior) college electronics class or a local Bio Medical services in your local hospital. When locating one kindly walk in and ask very nicely with the portable in hand if you my perform a operational test for you on benefit.

Most likely you will have expired or cheap electrodes. Even if they stick to the patient there still may not be enough moisture in the electrode to conduct a signal. Either that or some of the lead wires may be damaged. All it takes is one intermittent lead to cause the problem you are asking about. The best thing to do is to start with he electrodes and then try the leads.

The power supply (That converts wall (mains) AC power to DC ) is not making "clean" dc power. The most likely problem is the large filter capacitors are " leaking" currect or dry. The small AC component (ripple) that is not filtered from the transformed dc can look like a heartbeat so there is some protection circuitry in these devices. It may be something else, but the large can filter capacitors are most likely. I always recommend that medical equipment be repaired by trained, insured factory technicians. Too many problems are likely to occur and you don't want to misdiagnose someone or electrocute someone because you are too cheap to get it repaired professionally. On the other hand, if you are in central Africa and using it for an elephant research project, get your soldering iron and replace the parts. -Mark
