Question about Hoover Runabout U50-940 Bagged Upright Vacuum
It probably is not broken. It only operates when you recline the handle into the vacuuming position. At that time it goes to whatever setting you have it set on. When it is in the full upright position, it will be in the highest setting no matter where the nob is set.

On this model it is only a single slide adjustment lever. have you trie to tilt the vac backwards (lifting the wieght off the front wheels) and then slide the adjustment lever?
If there is a mechanical issue with it. take the bottom plate and roller out, and then the 2 small screws which hold the cover on underneath. you should be able to see the problem from there

I found this on another site and it worked for me. RonL
Looking at the brush, remove the two screws from the black plate holding the brush. There are two clips that holds this plate once you remove the screws. This should be easy to remove with a flat type screw driver. Now is the tricky part to remove the top cover of the vacuum so you can access the compartment to put the belt on. The whole top part of this vacuum comes off. If you look above the part where black plate was, there are two more clips on the top left and top right hand corner. These two hold one end of the top cover. It is not as simple as pushing the clip to one end to slide out. You have to find a gap between the edge of top cover and bottom structure(right next to each clip) and shove the flat screw driver in and push the top cover away from the bottom structure and push down the top cover. You will notice that there are invisible hinges between the two which locks in the top cover.
Do the same procedure for the bottom right and left edges(right next to each end of the brush) of the vacuum and separate the two(bottom structure and top cover) out using the flat type screw driver..

Hi There Alec from VacuumSpot here.
Most of these machines don't actually change the height until the handle is lowered so even though you change the dial when it is an upright position it is not until you lower the handle that the height is actually selected. Assuming that you are aware of this and it is still not adjusting I would suspect you have a small arm or lever broken. It is very rare for a height selector to simply fall out of place. The job would take 5 minutes in my opinion so it is simple but a bit fiddly.
