Question about Intermatic K4221C Photo Cell Control 120 V 50/60 Hz. 1800 Watt "T" Swivel M

1 Answer

My son bought a new house. It has an Intermatic K4221 photo cell that never appears to work. It looks like it is connected to porch lights. They won't come on either by photocell or manual light switch. He put new bulbs in and I checked breakers. All appear to be OK. But no lights ever come on. I turned breaker off and on fast. I turned it off and waited a while, Nothing. Any advice? I did not have my ohmeter at the time, but plan to go back with it.Thanks

Place tape over photocell lens, and flash switch off-on. Did the light come on?If you know how - remove the photocell from the circuit and see if the light works. If the light works, then the photocell is probably bad. Check power from switch to photocell with test meter.

SOURCE: Describe your Intermatic K4221C Photo Cell Control

It may be your location for the photo cell. There is a cover on the cell in most cases that slides up and down to let in light. Or you may try turning it in a little different direction to get more light.

Outdoor cfl lights come on and won't turn off. i just installed two brand new intermatic 4121c photo controls on 2 lights and the lights stay on all the time.

I don't have repair for defective product.
Two cfl lights will not exceed load rating of photo-eye

1) Put black tape over photo eye and see if lights turn off. Do not expose photo eye to direct sunlight. Turn photo eye away from possible source of light at night.

2) Wiring is suspect.
Open following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-Cooper-277-pilot-light-switch.html#photo-eye

3) Reversed polarity is next suspect.
Cable from breaker box has black, white and ground wires.
Separate wires, turn power ON, stand on dry boards and never on dirt or ground, do not lean or touch anything: test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester lights up on Hot wire. Tester should light up one-and-only one wire as Hot. Hot wire connects to photo-eye black wire.
Next, test Hot wire to other wire and tester will light up on neutral. Photo-eye white wire connects to Neutral.

4) Short to ground. Disconnect ground wire and see if there is a short running back to busbar that is completing circuit.

5) K4100 series is rated for ballast. Replace CFLs with regular light bulb and see if there is difference.
This should not be the factor, so add a comment if you discover this photo eye cannot handle CFLs.

6) Contact Intermatic.

1) You performed correct troubleshoot steps down the line.
Last thing would be to install defect timer on another light circuit in house, and see if problem is the timer or wire going to coach lights.

2) EJ351C has 1 year limited warranty.
Buy new EJ351c and install single pole light switch until timer replacement is available.
Timer has easy 2-wire installation. Turn off power. Connect new timer just like old one was connected. Either timer black wire connects to either wire in switch box.

The lights do not go off ?? Is it a bad photocell? They are on all day..and night..

Photocells go bad.
If photocell was working before and stopped working, then photocell is bad.
If photocell never worked, then check wiring.
I buy cheap 120Volt photocells at home center, and when they go bad, buy same brand again, and return bad one in new package if bad one still looks new.

Intermatic has 120V and 240V photocells.

What does the red wire attach to for a k4221 photo control?

The power wire coming into the control has a black, white and copper (ground) wire. Hook the balck wire to the control black, All the gound wires hook together, all the white wires hook together, then hook the red wire to the black of the light that you want to turn off and on.
