Spa indicator says Water SW Open...what does that mean and how do I fix?

This means that the pressure switch is not closing. Generally, this is a lack of water flow issue. The main cause is a dirty filter. Clean cartridges, backwash sand, backwash and recharge DE, whatever is needed to clean the filter, this should fix the problem. If not check other sources of restricted flow: filter baskets, pump baskets, shut-off valves. If everything is clear and there is good flow returning to the pool it could be a bad pressure switch. Replace with the correct switch for your heater.

How can I verify that water flow rate to my Hayward H series heater is above minimum required 20 GPM?

Most pool pump/filter systems are designed to achieve the minimum recommended flow rate. A pump system with at least 1HP motor should achieve the minimum flow rate, but a 0.75HP motor would likely also achieve it. The Hayward H series heaters do not include a water flow rate sensor, but rather use a water pressure sensor to verify the pump is operating. If the system has insufficient water flow even when the pressure is within normal operating limits, the heater will likely over heat and open the water pressure relief valve located on the outlet header. This condition could occur if the down-stream line is blocked (by a closed valve or similar condition). It is important to avoid this condition since the heater will release pressure via opening a relief valve, spilling water directly out of the heater manifold.

The only adjustment for hydraulic sensing within the H series heaters is the water pressure sensor. See other articles within fixya for this procedure.

Hayward Pool Heater H250FDP reads Lo....pressure gauge is at 22. Cleaned all contacts, only 1.5 yrs old.

No problem with heater, in most cases.... Just acting normally.
"LO" is simply informing you that the Heater is not sensing proper water flow through it! A Flow Problem.
A special sensor, called a pressure switch is this source. But... That does not mean it is bad - No, it is in most cases just doing its job!
Most common reason - Dirty Filter.
A good cleaning of the cartridges, or maybe a breakdown and recharge of a DE Filter, or a good cleansing backwash of your sand filter, will remedy this situation.
Or... Check for any OTHER reason or situations water flow may be reduced through the heater:
  • enough water in pool or spa?
  • If you have a weir gate in skimmer, is it stuck in the UP position?
  • Are any valves closed?
  • Do you have a bypass valve at the heater?
    • If open, this will reduce the amount of water going thru heater, close it to the point, LO goes away.
  • Etc
Good Luck - hope this helped.

I loose discharge water flow after about 5 minutes of running perfectly. The pump has no air bubble and is trying to push water thru filtration system ( if I open the backwash valve I have very good flow...

If you have a pressure gage it would help .. if the pressure is high then there is probably an obstruction in the return pipe to the pool .. if the pressure is low then there is most likely a restriction in the supply or suction side of the pump .. this would seem more likely to me from your description, there may be something obstructing the flow into the pump, a clog, a collapse hose from the suction, some flap of pool liner .. something like that ..

How to open pool, fill sand filter with water?

I happen to have a copy of the users manual for this pool filter. These are the instructions for operating your filter.

1. Be sure correct amount of filter sand media is in tank and
that all connections have been made and are secure.
2. Depress Vari-Flo control valve handle and rotate to
BACKWASH* position. (To prevent damage to control valve
seal, always depress handle before turning.)
3. Prime and start pump according to pump instructions (be
sure all suction and return lines are open), allowing the filter
tank to fill with water.
WARNING: ALL SUCTION AND
DISCHARGE VALVES MUST BE OPEN WHEN
STARTING THE SYSTEM. FAILURE TO DO
SO COULD CAUSE SEVERE PERSONAL
INJURY.
Once water flow is steady out the waste line, run the pump for
at least 2 minutes. The initial back-washing of the filter is
recommended to remove any impurities or fine sand particles
in the sand media.
4. Turn pump off and set valve to RINSE position. Start pump
and operate until water in sight glass is clear—about 1/2 to 1
minute. Turn pump off, set valve to FILTER position and
restart pump. Your filter is now operating in the normal filter
mode, filtering particles from the pool water.
5. Adjust pool suction and return valves to achieve desired
flow. Check system and filter for water leaks and tighten
connections, bolts, nuts, as required.
6. Note the initial pressure gauge reading when the filter is
clean. (It will vary from pool to pool depending upon the
pump and general piping system). As the filter removes dirt
and impurities from the pool water, the accumulation in the
filter will cause the pressure to rise and flow to diminish.
When the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI (0.55-0.69
BAR) higher than the initial "clean" pressure you noted, it is
time to backwash (clean) the filter (see BACKWASH under
Filter Control Valve Functions.)

High pressure, and heater noise

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but if the PSI on the gauge is high then the problem may not be the heater. When you have the system turned on, and the PSI is reading higher than normal, just the flow of water coming out your return lines. If the flow is normal, like when you clean your filter, then see if you have a way to re-route the water so it bypasses the heater. If the PSI on gauge drops, then the issue is in the heater.

If the flow of water is slower than normal, with the PSI reading high, then you have a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be something simple like removing debris from skimmer and pump backets, to time to backwash, or clean, the filter.

If the flow of water is really hard and fast, with the PSI high as well, then you have too much water going through the system and need to slow it down.

Hi sstanl, Is your pump output or flow normal back to pool? if there is no water flowing through system you will get no expulsion of air or pressure reading on gauge. If pump is working then you probably have a clogged air release valve and maybe a clogged gauge. Just remove air relief assembly from filter top, remove gauge and clear any obstructions in parts. You should easily be able to blow air thru assy with gauge removed. Teflon tape the components and snug them back in their places. restart your pump and voila! air will come out when prime is established.
