Why won't the blades turn?

One or both of the drivers are broken, check the clutch on the top of the motor and the other one on the bottom of the beaker. You will find something there worn out or broken.

Magic bullet

Blenders usually have some sort of interlock that prevents power from being turned on if the container is not locked in place. This could be the reason for the problem

Blender overheated

If it won't run once it has cooled down, you have probably cooked the electric motor, which is not worth trying to fix.

If you have some time to poke around, it is vaguely possible that a switch has burnt out, which can be fixed/cleaned. Another longshot is a burnt out fuse, but I doubt it has one.

My blender is leaking slightly from underneath the blade. Is there a way to tighten the blade coupling?

I am guessing you have a KSB52. If the leak is through the blade spindle then tightening won't help. The "wingnut" is tightened through use anyway. The most likely cause is a failed seal. The whole blade unit will need replacing, search Amazon for 9704291

Blender has power but won"t turn on

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
Well the mal-function can be due to numerous reasons. You need to choke out each possibility one by one.
Loose Connections ( Check for all the connections to the circuitry and motor). Bad Starter Button ( Check for the button switching using a Multi meter). Bad Motor Winding (Motor bushes or winding can be the bottle neck).
Check for the quoted possibilities and you'll soon find one good reason for the mal-function.. Feel free to ask anything regarding the trouble.

Concerned.

My kitchenaid blender does not whizz around when it is put together> the couplking spins when the glass part is off that is, when it has nothing on it> the coupling does not look used or...

There are really only two reasons why the blades won't spin, either the coupler is broken, or the blade unit is damaged. Check the picture of the blade unit here: Check pictures of the coupler here: Hopefully it should be obvious whether the coupler is ok, if it is, are both wings on the wingnut under the blade unit?
