Change headlamp

Check for power at headlamp socket with tester. If no power, check fuses. If power but still no lamp check ground wire connection with tester. If all check out you have a bad lamp bulb.

How to use a continuity tester

The most basic continuity tester (or test light or toner) are often said to provide a simple "go" or "no go" type indication (you'll see below that this is not entirely true). They usually are self powered by a battery, and have two probes to make contact with the circuit, component, wire, etc. under test.

Continuity testers are used on dead or un-powered circuits only. Likewise, they need to be tested prior to use to make sure that the battery, lamp, etc. are in good working order. Testing is done simply by touching the probes together. When connected to each other, note the intensity of the indicator - whether it is a lamp, audible alert or other indication. This is your 100% continuity reference indication.

If there is a complete path or circuit between the probes on the tester, an indication will be given. This could be brightly lit lamp, tone or buzz sound from a speaker, etc. A circuit with only fair or poor continuity may provide a dimly lit lamp or a "sick" sounding buzzer. Keep in mind that some items under test may have very poor continuity - say 20% or 30% or other unknown value that will not be sufficient to provide an indication - but will still conduct. This should alert you that a continuity tester really isn't a "no go" indicator. This is important to remember. This is where an Ohm meter shines when compared to a simple continuity tester. It will pinpoint just how much continuity there is in a circuit.

I hope this helps!

Ok, is there a trick to a 925ABD lamp socket, turn key, 3 way switch to make it work if it stops or do you need to replace it? Chick doing her own honey-do list. Thanks!

yes, easiest is the total replacement. its simple if you have any kinda of continuity tester , you can get at radio shack for about 12 bucks, and the socket for about 3 dollars.remove the socket with a small screwdriver ,unplug first.check new socket with the tester by putting the tester to ohms mode,to make sure you are doing correct put the 2 leads together meter will show a dead want to connect the hot lead to the base of the socket and the white or nuetral lead to the shell or side of the socket. using the tester to make sure put one lead of the tester on the screw that connects the wire and the base of the socket, the tester will show a dead short thats your hot lead

Slow battery drain on my 2000 GMC jimmy. tried to clip the vanity lights on sunshade. could this be the problem? is there a fuse or a different way to make sure these are shut off and not draining the...

Easiest way to find the drain is to perform a parasitic draw test. Put a voltmeter in-line with the ground side of the negative battery lead and terminal post. Then disconnect your vanity lamps and see if the voltage drastically goes down. If not, you can start to disconnect things, like trunk lamps, dome lamps, fuses, etc. to see if they make a difference. The easier way, remove the vanity lamps and start vehicle for a couple weeks and see if problem goes away. Another thing is to check the battery, sometimes the battery can be weak and lose its charge. Surface discharge and corrosion at battery terminals and battery surface can also cause this, clean all terminals and battery surface if you think this could be a problem.

If I am trying to find the 'hotwire' for lights how do I do that? Do I touch 1 wire and the junction box then the other and the junction box and whichever lights the instrument that is the hot wire?

Test for hot wire:
By code, hot wire should be black.

Take photo of wiring so everything can be put back.
Remove wires from device.
Separate wires for testing.
Use ordinary tester.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on hot wire.

Now test for neutral wire.
You know hot wire.
Test each hot wire to other wires (except bare ground)
Tester lights up on neutral.

If you do not have a tester, take ordinary wall lamp.
Plug on wall lamp has 2 prongs.
Prongs should have a hole.
Spread prongs apart.
Wrap bare copper wire into hole on prong1.
Turn on power.
Test prong2 to each wire.
Light comes on when prong2 touches hot wire
