Ensure pump is working. Remove end cap [usually silver and same size as little finger nail] check with small screwdriver held lightly into the pump body that the pump is rotating. Water will drip out protect from this with cloth. in the combustion chamber there is a flame detector, usually at the back it looks like a thick wire sticking up about 1-1/12 inch. Clean this with medium 120 grit sand paper AND clean out the gas holes in that area. a tooth brush is good. Vac out the dust if you can Small hose pipe connected to vac nozzle

Hot water heater womt light, flammable vapor sensor code

Most likely: Combustion chamber got too hot because air intake is clogged with dust, causing less air to flow upward through vent pipe ... the slowed flow of air caused combustion chamber to overheat.

What brand and model water heater?
Look at label on side of unit and add comment.
Otherwise call service tech to repair/ replace water heater and clean arrestor screen (air intake) and replace or reset parts as needed, depending on model number and brand water heater.

AO Smith, Bradford white, and Rheem are main manufacturers.
Each has slightly different repair protocol, and each gas control valve can also be different. So more information is needed.

Where is the combustion shutoff system on a Rheem 30 gal moble home hot water heater

Disproportionate number of water heater problems are Rheem-related, yet Rheem is just 1 of 3 major water heater manufacturers.

If you have Rheem tank-type gas water heater, and the combustion shut off has tripped the FV system, then there is a broken glass vial located under the burner.
Rheem does not post service manuals, and they may or may not send the glass vial for replacement. Depending on model which appears on label on side of tank. Year of manufacture are 3rd and 4th digits in serial number.
And they may want you to contact a qualified service technician (plumber)
You will have to replace glass vial, and clean the arrestor screen and clean the combustion parts, check gas pressure, and check venting.
Other companies post service manuals and do not rely on the glass vial.

Kenmore Water heater, Model # 153.339462, Pilot lights, burner burns for approx. 10 - 15 minutes then both go out. after which it is more difficult to light the pilot. I need ideas please

Clean combustion parts, clean air intake, get more air to water heater and see if problem continues.
Look at color of burner flame and pilot flame: if flame has yellow-and-orange instead of clear blue flame, then combustion parts need cleaning.

Pilot and burner problems can be caused by bad thermocouple, thermocouple not sitting in flame, weak pilot flame due to dirty tube or low gas pressure, air in gas line, no draft up vent, backdraft coming down vent, dirty combustion parts, clogged air intake, insufficient air, insufficient air quality, hot attic, bad gas control valve, etc.

I believe 640 is typical tank-type atmospheric-vented gas water heater.
Gas water heater problems can get complicated. New heater sells for $350 at local box store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html

If thermostat is not controlling temperature accurately, then (1) gas control needs replacement (2) water heater has sediment build-up (3) combustion and burner parts need cleaning. (4) All three things above, plus additional causes such as bad venting or not enough combustion air.

Usually recommended that plumber replace gas control valve thermostat:
See typical tank-type thermostats:

I have a 50 gallon rheem direct vent natural gas heater. The pilot light goes out on an infrequent but aggravating basis. I replaced the thermocouple one time and it got better for about a year but has...

Open following links for pilot light help:

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Pilot-light-will-not-stay-lit.pdf
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Negative-pressure.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bosch_Ventilating_tight_houses.pdf

Since pilot light goes out and can be re-lit, problem is probably not thermocouple, gas control valve, or air in gas line. But these things can factor in as contributing factors.
Problem is likely one of following or combination of following including dirty burner parts, tight house, incorrect vent lengths, negative pressure caused by other venting appliances, condensation dripping down into combustion area, and inadequate oxygen supply due to hot or closed-off room or attic location.

Gas water heaters draw air from surrounding area. If water heater is located inside house, then air has to enter home through cracks and when doors and windows are opened. Other gas appliances and vent fans also draw air from same indoor area. When other vent fans turn on, air can be drawn down the water heater vent and blow out pilot light.
Inspect combustion chamber to make sure there is no condensate water dripping down from incorrect vent that is putting out flame. If combustion chamber is dry, then close doors and windows. Turn on all vent fans and gas appliances that vent outdoors, and see if water heater pilot goes out.
Consult with plumber or product manual about proper horizontal and vertical lengths of vent pipe for your model. Have plumber clean combustion parts and inspect vent termination and check gas pressure and bleed gas line.
Add louver opening to outdoors so air can enter room where water heater is located.

Pilot light on water heater wont stay lit

The thermocouple has failed. It is the temp probe that goes from the pilot lite burner area to the control valve. Go to your local plumbng repair shop and buy one. Most appliance parts stores have them also. Take the old one with you and they will hook you up with an exact replacement. They are not that hard to change. Usually a nut or 2 screws in the temp bulb area at the burner end and a nut that threads into the control valve.
Make sure before you install the new one that the area where it mates to the gas valve is clean. Should be about a 20 min job including clean up with replacement parts in hand.
