Question about Sony VAIO PCV-RX450DS PC Desktop

Want to install new WD hard drive into my old computer

I want to intall a new Western Digital hard drive (160 gb) into my Sony PCV-RX450 computer, which is running Windows ME with a defective hard drive. The original system CDs looked, on the monitor, as though I was installing the old ME system onto the new hard drive, but the disk is blank and I get a message that ''there is no operating system''. Must I get permission from Sony? Instructions with the hard drive are poor and tell me some computers can't install more than 137 gb and they talk about my buying an ATA. Can you talk me through the installation?

I can still see that there are data files on the old Sony HD and I want to save them by copying them onto the new WD HD if I ever get a working hard drive. Thanks!

I believe the Western Digital problem was misunderstood. 1)I can see files on my old hard drive, which I want to retrieve and put onto the new Western Digital HD. 2) I used the Sony program disk containing windows ME and other applications to format and load onto the new Western Digital. On screen, It looks as though it was loading onto the WD HD, but there are no files on the WD HD.

    For davef193:

Yes, I bought the computer in 2001 and it has a FAT system. It had a disk similar to Disk Manager, but it partitioned the new WD HD differently and this may be why my program installation is being rejected. I have used some start-up floppies to partition the disk the way it was, but I still can't install the program with ME.

You say you see data on disks on your existing system, yet they appear blank when trying to install? Please try to dig a little deeper and find your setup file. Data wouldn't disappear unless your running NTFS now and the disks are FAT.

I am not familiar with that particular Sony system, But if you wouldn't mind, could you tell me the year of purchase? I would assume running windows ME would be around 2001. A lot has happened to computers in this time that you would want to take advantage of. You see, we were stuck in the FAT file system pretty much until Windows XP. ( If I'm wrong on this please correct me ). The FAT file system was limited in how big a disk could be used and how much RAM could be used. What I'm saying is, I think as long as you stay with the FAT file system, you're all set to migrate that disk into your system. The Disk must have come with some software for this purpose like Disk Manager, which will partition the disk in two. Be aware that Disk Manager must be present on your disk forever or you lose your data. I could ramble on, but that is your cheapest out.

Well, from the sounds of it you will have to do a new format on the WD, as well as a program called FDISK. If you have your original ME disks, they should have a startup program which will automatically format your disk to the existing level on the older one. Unless you are being hit with the FAT blunder of too many cylinders. Hopefully you can still play with the new disk without causing major downtime. You've still got your files and once you get your new drive formatted properly, you will put them all on the brand new one. I hope I've been some help. I've a lot of dos experience and ME has DOS in it and FDISK etc. Good Luck

ps about the 137Gb - you can make two partitions, one drive c: and one drive D: then you make both smaller.

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.
