" the thickness, size, or capacity of something, especially as a standard measure, in particular." In its utilitarian sense , the term gauge refers to a standard of measurement. A 12 gauge wire has a defined diameter, and it is standardized, so if you buy 12 gauge wire in various places across the country, the wire will have the same diameter , wherever it's purchased. The same applies to gauges of metal, or the thickness of the metal. Standard measures such as linear measures , inches, mm, feet, cm, are all standardized measurements. Standardization creates consistency and the ability to replicate something.

Adjust mikuni carb float

Pull the float bowl and float bowl gasket off the carburetor.
Place the carburetor upside down and let the float rest against the float needle.
Measure the distance between the gasket surface located on the bottom of the carburetor to the edge of the float. On a 24 mm Mikuni card, the distance between the gasket surface and the float should be 1 inch. On a 20 mm Mikuni carburetor it should be 7/8-inch.
Bend the metal tab on the float that rests against the float needle. Bend it towards the float needle if the measurement is shallow and away from the needle if the measurement is too much.
Use a pair of needle-nose pliers, making very small adjustments to the metal tab and then recheck the measurement.

1987 suzuki samurai 1.3 stock engine. Temperature gauge is not working I decided to replace the Coolant Temp Sending Unit after market sender. I have the sender with two prong. Still my gauge is not...

rare car, how cute. its a 1.3L what ,its EFI , not carb.
the ECT and guage are not related at all.
each has its own sensors.
dont use a torch you will kill it, use hot water man.
the guage is a 1 wire sensor. it has a different resistance profile than
the EFI Engine coolant sensor ECT. is a different sensor.
the EFI sensor 2 pins, reads 300 ohms hot and about 3000 ohms cold.
hot is 200 F, not torch 2000f hot. for sure. never exceed 212f on any sensor ever.
I must presume you are futzing the wrong sensor.
first off, I will cover just the gauge, and the fsm is on line

first off the guage has very low resistance,as does the gauge sender
that is because is thermal acting the guage gets hot and the needle moves, very very crude this. very very old school stuff.
they did the bs until 1995.

use a 194 lamp and ground the yellow wire as shown
meter goes upscale the meter is good.
now the sender.
is RTC reverse temperature coeffiecent, that is
hotter = lower ohms. pdf page 146 left.
122f is about 155 ohms
176F = about 50 ohms
212f (boiling water) is 28 ohms and gauge shows HOT.

that is it for the 1 wire sensor.
stupidly they say to put sealing tap on threads,
dont, or you get an open ground. amazing...
tighten firmly or risk cracking the intake. its a tapered British thread.

now the rock. the right sensor for JUST the Guage , coolant.

My gas guage is reading full all the time and my check gauges is on

This might be more going on then just a "stuck float".

However to try to free the hung float full the tank (again) and have a with a few people shake the car back and forth, this took place on my own car.

I was able to fill it up again and fix it. Another problem may be the gauge, at times they can become over extended and be trapped, only way to fix it is to help the needle back.

Why is gas coming out of the open end line hanging down fro the carburetors when the bike is running.

The float needle has jelled fuel holding it open, rust from your tank is holding the float needle open, The float needle tip is damaged, or you have a sunk float. Take apart clean and inspect your carburetor. Replace any worn or damaged parts.

The fuel guage on my 2005 HD Road King stopped working--its either the guage or the sender/float unit---how do I replace both items??

Hi H36dive, always check your instrument fuses first also you could have a faulty sending unit or guage, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit and gauge, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. Bad IPC.......If u can round up a tech 2 scanner, do a guage sweep and i bet u will see the temp guage will not operate correctly......a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) is really the only fix. Once installed it has to be programmed. If u need any help send me a return message.

Oil gauge on tahoo moves back and forth

Is it the factory oil guage? Is it an electronic or mechanical guage? if it is mechanical that means you actually have a small diameter tube from the engine to the dash area, which may have a kink or bend in it. If it is electronic then your dealing with a wire which can have a slight short in it or a bad connection. REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!

An oil guage that works properly will have up and down readings. When the RPM's increase, so should the oil pressure guage. when you are not running the engine( idleing) the guage will read lower and sometimes bounce back and forth around 5 PSI. sometimes more depending on the grade of oil, how hot the engine is and how old is the oil.

Fuel guage reads 1/4 at all times even when full. How do I repair

1.If the needle on the guage is stuck. you can try tapping the guage to see if the needle moves or turn the ignition on and off a few times to see if you can get it to move. If the guage drops to empty when you turn off the ignition you know that its not the guage. (note that the guage does not drop to zero when ignition is off with all cars of this age).

2. The problem could be with the sensor in the fuel tank itself. Rocking the vehicle up and down from the rear (you will need help doing this) may free the sensor level indicator ball in the tank.
