SOURCE: Reverse gear in my Toyoto 2002 Yaris crunches
Have you ever drained your transmission fluid (to replace it)? If you haven't, do it now. If you see large (a millimeter in diameter or larger) particles in the fluid or on the magnetic drain plug, someone has been having more fun with your car's transmission than they should have. You will be due for replacement syncromesh gears soon (but I doubt anyone replaces those by themselves anymore, so you might be looking at an entire transmission replacement).
You will be hard put getting the dealer to do any transmission work while the transmission works (even if just barely).
If you do decide to go the transmission replacement route, replace the clutch assembly as well, and drive the car for another 100,000 miles.
Hope this helps a bit.

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced. The switch is just plug and play

Locate the fuse box underneath the drivers side steering wheel and remove the cover lid. Underneath the lid is a diagram of what each fuse controls. Locate the "Stop Lamp" and "Taillight" fuses and pull them out and check them with a fuse test light (avalible at your local auto parts store) Replace the burned out fuse with the same number fuse (the amp number is located on top of the fuse) and your lights will work again

These are usually on the same circuit as the tail lights so if they are working it's not a fuse problem.have you checked the bulbs?
