Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Problem with Western Digital 1.0TB WD10EALX hard drive.

The hard drive isn't read by the computer. I'm using a Vantec Nextar hard drive dock to plug it into my laptop. The computer recognizes the peripherical device, but not the hard drive. I also tried partitioning it, but an error message appears with a "I/O problem". The hard drive dock works correctly with a backup harddrive, so I'm guessing the problem isn't with the dock. Both the dock and the hard drive are brand new. I'm working on an Asus Zenbook i5 with Windows 8.1.

Having looked at the dock, if it's not appearing in the windows disk management I'm afraid you'll have to try another i/o method to test whether the drive is ok. The easiest option is to find someone with a computer which has a spare sata slot and partition it with that (assuming it sees it) or try a different device like a sata to usb converter. Alternatively you could make a linux or other bootable usb stick with formatting/partitioning utility and put the drive in your laptop, boot from the stick and partition it that way. I don't think there are any user settings in the dock you have and no jumpers on the drive so you're scuppered. Let us know how you get on?
Of course having partitioned it it might just not be compatible with your dock, although
Just one more thing if you haven't, try connecting the power to the dock before you plug it into the laptop and try each of your usb ports

Testimonial: "So here's what went on. First of all, we discovered that the dock needed to be plugged directly into the power outlet (not a powerbar) and that the only usb port that works is the one providing more power (don't know how it's properly called). With those power issues cleared, the computer sees the hard drive, but can't format/initialize or partition it. We tried formatting it with Gparted from Linux, and it did'nt even see the drive. Since I'm using a laptop, I gave the hard drive to someone with a sata slot so he can try to format it. And now I wait."

I have an iomega 31868500 external hard drive I haven't used in years. I now want to use it to store files from my wife's Toshiba laptop running Windows 7.

Hi Jack

It would be pointless having a hard drive fixed to Read Only.
I don't think there is a switch setting to set as Read Only.
The original Iomega (early days) removable cartridge drives had a plastic tab on the cartridge to allow it to be write protected (RO).
So perhaps the Iomega Enclosure (Interface electronics inside) is getting out of date.
The oldest part of your drive will be the Enclosure & USB port.

I would suggest you open the enclosure and take out the actual hard drive. Should still be good to use.

Drives are either 2.5" or 3.5" Size Standard.
Eg Pocket drives are 2.5" size, Slower operation as they use 5 volt only. One bump during use can kill them!

3.5" use 5v & 12v & spin much faster (3500 to 7200rpm) for high speed transfer. Eg Movie Streaming / Fast Backups and are more robust.

The internal connector will either be the older IDE / ATA type connector Or
The new universal SATA connector (serial ATA much smaller)

You will need to determine this.....

The Fix:
The most convenient enclosure these days would be a DOCK type that allows you to plug in both 2.5 & 3.5 SATA drives. AND use USB 3 as a faster Future Proof Hard Drive
Then you can plug one in for Movies and another for Music and a third for Backups. Each drive purchased separately.
Eg 3x 1TB should be cheaper than 3 separate enclosed drives.

I'm sure there is a dual DOCK also for the older ATA connector.
But all future Drives will be SATA.

Once you determine what connector your drive uses then you can plug it in to the more modern housing and format the drive for Windows NTFS or FAT32 (Windows & Mac & TV's)

Good Luck

How can Western Digital hard disk drives be recognized by third party USB external docking stations?

The format on a disk, will not be relevant of recognition via an USB connector. To connect a drive via USB, the computer must have the correct driver for the hardware you are connecting. Be sure you connect the HD coerce to the external harness and make sure it is supplied with the correct voltages.
When you connect a working system on the USB connector and the drive does not have a format, the computer will see that and ask you if it should format the drive.

Using Western Digital Hard Drive as External Hard Drive Problems

OK! First of all try to disconnect all usb's from neighbouring usb ports as they might be using up too much current resulting in your HD not having enough power to be powered up properly! Also, try to use a different usb port.

If all these fail, please use a voltmeter (if any available...) to check if your devices actually function...

Hope this helps! If not, please report back!

Damm errm * Damn ;) WD My Book 500GB Essential Hard Drive

I'm including a URL to tiger direct who sells what I referred to in my last post. 2 examples of USB to IDE/SATA adapters are the Vantec & DiabloTec . They both are easy to use & very flexible in the type of hard drive you can connect to. You may have a local computer store that sells something similar.

The propose of a device like this is to allow you read a suspected defective hard drive by plugging the hard drive into a connector on the adapter & then plugging the USB connector into your home computer. Windows 2000 & above & Mac machines will detect the hard drive as a mass storage device. In order to interface with the defective hard drive you will need to remove it from the My book enclosure.

If you purchase an adapter & need further assistance respond to this post. Good luck!
