Question about Craftsman 21 Hp 42" Deck, Ys 4500 Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

Craftsman, 18 hp Kohler, 44" deck I am looking for information for belt replacement. The belt that engages the deck keeps coming off the pullys. I am assuming the the belt is old and is streched out. The belt appears old. Maybe there are some other items I should check??

Try looking on the flat part of the belt for numbers go to napa auto parts and they will cross reference it or measure it.
or go to sears.com and enter the model # from your mower after you click on parts direct at sears site and find your belt #
or check all your pulleys with the belt off to be sure they turn free.( except pto )
be sure the belt guards are adjusted as close to the pulleys as possible with out hitting the belt when belt is engaged for the blades to turn

Now is a great time to remove the deck and sharpen the blades! In the process, you will find your problem. Look for clogs, seized bearings, freely rotating belts, etc... The problem is in the deck or drive belt. Hope this helps!

Looks like your mowers have a little age on them. I recommend that you remove the decks for inspection. I bought one recently that the deck was rusted out in the middle causing it to flex and throw the belt. Check for good alignment all around and make sure that the blade guides around the pulleys are as they should be. If not that will cause them to eat the belt. Make sure everything moves as it should including the blade engagement mechanisms.

I hope this helps you get going.

Missing springs on deck pullies need diagram of deck for springs

Go to www.managemyhome.com and download the owners manual.
After that I would go to www.searspartsdirect.com and look at the pictures of your mower deck (again you need the model #). Once you figure out what you  need then all you have to do is order then from sears.
Good luck!

Craftsman 18.5 riding mower when I engage the blades to cut the blades turn But they do not engage NO Power.Blades Turn But Not enough to cutthe grass.

Hi Jeff, If you look at the deck, one or more of those pulleys is a tensioner, It pushes against the belt to tighten it, The rest of the pulleys can be identified by the fact that they only have a bolt through the middle, whereas the tensioner is mounted on an adjustable arm with a slot to allow adjustment. It should also be the only one that the belt doesn't go around the pully it just pushes on one side.If the tensioner arm is all the way to the end of the slot, the belt is streched and will need replaced but sounds like it may have come loose. Some of these decks also have a spring on the tensioner arm and those come off from a stick or other debris. Check it out and if you have a problem let me know and I will try to come up with a diagram. If your mower is that new there should be a belt diagram on the deck. i will need a model number of the deck or mower for that. Good luck!
