13.20.00 Jam in top cover area, no jam

I turned on the printer and it makes an awful screeching sound from inside the printer. it does its initial check and gives me the paper jam error "13.20.00 Jam in top cover area" When I opened it up, there was no jam. It will not let me print at all until I clear this nonexistant jam.

A jam exists in the top-cover area.
A 13.20.00 error message indicates that the printer power was turned on or that the printer attempted to initialize while the pre-feed sensor (PS102), the top of page sensor (PS102) and/or the fuser delivery sensor (PS108) was detecting media.

When the paper feed assembly is installed, the sensor-flag spring must be correctly positioned
for the flag to operate. If a paper-jam error message (13.20.00 JAM) appears on the control-panel
display after you replace the paper feed assembly, verify that this sensor-flag spring is installed
Hook the spring over the flag tab (see 1 in Figure). Fasten the paper feed assembly to the
chassis with the flag spring positioned in the hole in the transfer assembly. Release the spring
from the tab on the flag (see 2 in Figure). See figure below.
Verify that the flag is held in the upright position, can freely move, and always returns to the upright
position. If the flag does not move freely, or return to the upright position, an error
message (13.20.00 JAM) will appear on the control-panel display when the printer power is turned

Without seeing the printer or knowing what you have already done....a "13.20 Jam inside top cover" error means that a jam occurred in the registration assembly area.
Remove the toner cartridge.
Remove all paper from inside printer.
You should see a metal flap. That's part of the "registration assembly".
Lift it up and make sure that all paper pieces are removed. Use a flashlight if you can.
Make sure that the media size that you are using matches the tray settings and the dial on the tray.
Reinstall the cartridge and try again.

How do I fix a paper jam? I've got paper jam around the exit roller and I can't get it out?

There should be a way to unlock one of the sides. Try taking out the toner cartridge and going in that way. If you can see the paper, get a pair of needle nose pliers and SLOWLY see if you can pull the paper out.

Won't print - lound noise

Allow me to be the bearer of bad news. From what you describe, it sure sounds like you will have to talk to HP again and get another replacement. The only things that normally jam a carriage (that I have seen in my twenty some-odd years of doing this) is the shipping foam that holds the cartridge together, but that is as visible as a brick inside an egg, you can't miss it. Or a paper jam. However, if you have already checked it out and nothing seems out of place, then I would call HP before they tell you "oh... your warranty expired yesterday..." or something like that.

I do have to say one thing though. I had a client with a printer that kept complaining about a paper jam and nothing was visible; however, when I took it apart I found that several (and I'm only talking about three or four) paper shreddings were inside the printing area. Turns out that the paper shredder that was right next to the printer, when she emptied it out from time to time, a paper shedding or two would fly about and some landed inside the printer causing the paper jam. The term JAM in this case was over stated really because it was only two pieces of paper that happened to land on the sensor that indicates a paper jam.

Sorry, I am digressing. I would seriously consider going back to HP, especially since it looks like you might be able to get another one.

Paper Jam error won't clear

The only way you can clear a paper jam as bad as yours seems to be is to take the cover completely off (screws that hold it on). You have to be able to see the complete printer mechanical assembly and where the paper feeds through it to be sure that you get every piece of paper out. The reason for the screeching noise is that there is still something in the way of the printhead moving back and forth or finding the home position all the way to the left. The printhead to operate normally has to have a clear path to go back and forth. By looking at the cover for the screws (sometimes you have to lift the part where you change ink cartridges to see the ones you have to remove. Once it is off you can see clearly where the hangup is. Since yours is a multifunction printer you may need to disconnect some cables to take the cover completely off. When you disconnect any cable always be sure to note how it came off. Most plugs are keyed so that they cannot be plugged in backwards but that does not mean they cannot be forced on backwards. So be careful with that. Let me know if there is any other information that you need to make this easier for you. At this point you are getting to the realm of where most people would have a technician do that for you.

Printer says it has a paper jam even after it has been cleared

The screeching sound is caused when the print head reaches the end of its travel and hits the paper jam which you cannot see using the suggested jam-clearing steps. So

1. unplug the printer
2. lift the cover so the blue support on the left holds the cover up
3. plug in the printer, watch the printer head move
4. after it stops, gently move the printer head toward the middle and look at the far ends of travel. you should find the cause(s) of the jam up against the sides of the printer. remove with needle-nose pliers.
5. replace cover, plug in the machine. it will go through a cleaning or 2, but it should be ready to go after that
