It must be a processor overheating problem, check the vents are not restricted and if the fan is always on or never comes on because of a faulty temp setting then theres a overheating problem and the processor will shut down before any damage.

SOURCE: ThinkPad A21m type 2628
This is usually caused by one of three items.
1. The cdrom drive is failing
2. The hard drive is failing (it may say hdd 0)
3. The interface to those two items is failing
Consult your seller ASAP and check that he would accept a return. If it was bought "as is" then your are out of luck. So sorry for the bad news

Testimonial: "Thanks for your assistance. I'm going to pull the PCI card out. Still can't get wireless to turn on."
The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).
