Wires are soldered to it. Two of them. If there is a Red wire it goes to the Center terminal on the back of the jack. The Center hole is the Positive connection.
The Black wire goes to the outside terminal on the back of the jack.
Use good de-soldering/soldering skills. Do not make a cold solder joint. (Solder connection)
There are no exact Service Manuals listed for the Sony VAIO PCG-41217L Notebook PC. (It is also part of the VPCSC series. It is a VPCSC31FM)

Shows it to be one piece with no separate Switch Cover.
(Switch Cover: Flat plastic strip above Keyboard, and below Display Assembly.
Usually has the Power On button, LED indicator lights, speakers, etc in it)
Also shows me a Bottom View.
1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.
2) Lay the notebook on a clean, static free cloth, on your table.
Helps protect the table, and the laptop from scratching.
Lay the notebook bottom side up, Battery Compartment facing away from you.
Use a multi-compartment container, and label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.
SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws. Advise DO NOT mix them up.
You should be wearing an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
Average cost is around $3 to $6. Do not wear it, and/or connect to a good ground source, and when you are finished you can use your laptop for a doorstop.
Static 'kills' computers.

I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case. I feel an Anti-Static Mat is unwarranted.
You can set a large metal serving tray (Unpainted), on the table you're working on, and connect to it.
Or a large metal knickknack. (Unpainted)
You are going deep into the laptop, and the Static sensitive Processor, and other hardware components could be 'zapped'.
Use ESD wrist strap.
All screws are removed from the bottom of the laptop. All around the perimeter (Outside), and the inner ones.
The optical drive (CD/DVD drive) will slide out.
After the optical drive is removed, look to see if there are any hidden screws on the outside edge of the laptop, that may have been covered by the optical drive. Remove them if so.
Remove the Harddrive.
Remove the Ram Memory.
Remove all peripheral components. (Dummy PCI card, etc)
I don't know if the Palm Rest Cover removes on this model, or the Bottom Cover. (Base Enclosure)

The Keyboard Cable STAYS attached to the Keyboard. It removes from the motherboard. There is NO plug connector on the end of the Keyboard Cable.
The Keyboard Cable is a FFC. Flat Flex Cable,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flat-Flex-Cable.jpg
It ONLY plugs in, in one direction. Must go back the same way it was originally. Even if it was originally twisted.
For this reason you may wish to make a mark on one side of the cable, and a matching mark on the same side of the motherboard connector. (Sharpee?)
The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector.
Zero Insertion Force.
It is composed of two separate pieces, but DOES NOT come completely apart.
There is a larger rectangular Bottom part. This is the Body, and it is stationary. Mounted to the motherboard, and doesn't move.
There is a smaller rectangular piece on Top.
This is the Locking Bar.
There are two styles presently used;
1) This style slides. Slides up towards the LCD screen.
ONLY slides about 2mm. That is a little more than 1/16th of an Inch.

The Locking Bar is barely seen on top, and the sides. The 'tabs' of it on the sides, are eased towards the LCD screen, with the thumbnails.
2) This style flips up,
IF, the Locking Bar is removed from the Body, it is broken; or the Body hinge pins are broken.
EITHER way means MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT, and why I am being so detailed. Use care.

Put your mouse in the middle of the photo, and slide to the right side of the Keyboard.
See that half-moon tab sticking out, that looks to have a threaded hole in it?
Screw comes up from the Bottom of the laptop, and goes into this tab.
Looking closer at the open laptop view of the Keyboard, it almost looks like the Keyboard is under the Palm Rest Cover, and cannot be removed until the Palm Rest Cover is removed.
May just be the view, or my eyes.
