Okay so let me start off by saying that I'm not very computer savvy. I know the basics of handling a computer but all the fancy names go over my head. Which means that I'll need your help in "dumbing it down" to my level with step-by-step instructions.
With that said, here's the problem:
Awhile ago I bought my Acer Aspire 5050 and it was working fine. Now, for some reason most of my USB ports aren't working. Out of the blue they stopped recognizing my devices and the ones that they did recognize only charged and did nothing else. I tried uninstalling them by means of the control panel, but that only made the situation worse because the two ports that were working aren't working anymore. When I restarted the computer it said it found the driver software for it, but it encountered a problem while trying to install and couldn't continue.
I just need to know what to download or anything else to do to get my ports working again because without them my laptop is utterly useless to me.

None of them? Front or back? Turn on the computer and notice the screen to see what key ist says to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup during the boot process. Once you get in look to make sure the USB is enabled.
Hopefully you are not trying to put some new device into the port that might be too advanced for your system. Some systems can't handle things like a 1TB external drive.
Make sure you try something in the usb port that you know worked in the past and try different ports.
The keyboard fuse on the motherboard might be gone. If you are tech savvy, check the motherboard's keyboard fuse (it may be disguised as a 0 ohm resistor). Easier check is see if all the lights on the keyboard flash when you turn on the system. If not, it's probably that darn fuse. Easiest fix for the non-tech savvy is to get a USB keyboard.
IF YOUR KEYBOARD CURRENTLY IS USB then there might be something wrong with the power to that USB port...but if that's the case, it might be the keyboard that did it, so don't go plugging the keyboard into all your other usb ports...get another keyboard, preferably one with a PS/2 connector.
Make sure you're plugging the USB cord into the BACK of your computer, not a front USB port or a USB hub. Only the USB ports on the back have enough power normally to handle what the embroidery machine needs-a PC trick that Singer tends not to know.
We all have to start somewhere!
The simplest way is to see where your mouse is currently plug-in your computer: look for an identical 'USB' socket to the one the mouse is plug-in and plug the USB hub cable plug to this socket. You could also just unplug your mouse from the computer socket and plug the USB hub cable instead AND THEN plug the mouse in one of the socket on your Hub.
The computer should automatically install the software require to drive your newly installed USB hub.
Hope it helps!
Try another USB cable to see if that works. Also try pluging the cable into another port on your computer in case the port you use for that application is worn causing a bad connection. start with basics first.
I got a key ring for Christmas too ...when the keyring is on 'charge' mode it doesnt show on computer ...you have to remove the lead from key ring, switch off key ring then replace lead and switch to 'update' mode. Now if you double click on icon it should work!!!
if the usb detects other devices and not your drive, the drive itself may be faulty. If you plug in other devices in the usb and it detects them the usb drive or its connector is most likely bad.If it won't detect any devices the port is bad and drivers won't help.Possibly a motherboard issue.
When you connect a printer to your pc the operating system adds a virtual port. Your pc will typically have 3 physical usb ports but can have as many virtual ports as you have devices to connect to it.
1: Ensure that your printer has media loaded and is powered up and ready to print. Connect the USB cable. You should get a message on pc screen saying device (printer) found.
Open printer driver ( double click on the zebra printer icon - Start/control panel/printers & Faxes/) Click print test page. If it doesnt print you will see a printer icon with a red question mark.on your toolbar, double click on this. This will bring up a small window showing status of the print job, Click printer/properties/ports. Select the next free usb port and click apply. Drag the print status window so that you can see the message in the status window change from Error print to error Restarting. repeat trying each of your usb ports until printer works. start with the higheat usb with highest number and work your way down.
I had a brand new usb cord that didn't work but cost a lot of money. I went to wal-mart and bought a usb cord for like $6 that had a printer icon on the package and hooked that up and the message disappeared. I don't know if that helps but hope it does.
