The low side reading will usually correspond with the dash temp,45 lbs at low side should equal 45 degrees f at the dash with a medium fan speed and 70 to 80 degrees f outside temp with a good air flow through the condenser.(fan placed in front of vehicle).

Compressor does not engage when ac is turned on.


If the system is low or has no Freon, the clutch will not engage. Hook up a pressure tester on the low pressure line valve. It should read 30 psi at 65 degrees outside temperature and 50 psi at 85 degrees outside temperature. If there is pressure, then it could be a fuse or AC relay. If there is no pressure, then add freon with some pag oil, plus a leak dye will have to be added to the system from the low pressure valve. Only add 1 16 Oz. can to not over pressurize the system. If the clutch engages, then check for a leak. I would recommend taking this job to a qualified technician, since he would have the necessary equipment to put the system at a vacuum of -30- To empty the system and check for a leak.

Tracer air conditioner blows cool only sometimes


It is very possible that the A/C is not engaging part of the time. It can be overcharged. You have 2 safety switches on the A/C system. A high pressure and a Low pressure.

Pressure inside the system is dependent on the background temperature where the car sits. This means the A/C does not have to be turned on for the switches to activate. Their job is to cut off power to the compressor, so when you start your car, the power to the compressor may already be switched off.

There are charts for filling the Freon system. For sake of conversation, lets' say the low pressure cuts off at 20psi and the high at 300psi. Those are the ratings for the respective switches. You have a low charge, say 25psi at 80 degrees outside temp. Overnight or a Cold front comes in and the outside temp is 70 degrees. The system drops to 19psi as the car sits. The compressor clutch will not get power. Also for the high switch, the car sits as outside temp goes to 100 degrees. The A/C pressure climbs to 325psi as the Freon expands, the compressor clutch will not get power.

This is why many instructions tell you to bypass the pressure switches to charge the system. Your switches are constantly working to keep the pressure between 30psi and 300psi. MODERATION is key here. The longer the compressor clutch stays engaged, the more cooling you will have.

So the car makers recommend a fixed amount of Freon for each Model of car. Volume capacity is different for the length of the hoses, the size of the condenser, the chamber inside the compressor. It all is calculated so they know how many LBs of Freon will fit in the space to produce a given pressure.

Most of the pressure switches can be changed without significant loss of Freon, just a puff when the switch is removed and replaced. I have replaced more low pressure switches than the highpressure. It is probably because the springs are much weaker on the low side.

Some major autoparts stores have tool loaner programs. Manifold gauges are used to read both pressure ranges. If you did not purge the system with an electric or air powered Vacuum pump, you may have water condensation forming ice in the lines.

We tried adding freon to our 98 Montero AC unit but when we attempt to it says the it is at full pressure and will not let us add any but it is only blowing hot air with the ac on, so we do not think it...


Hi, if you have full pressure (40-50 PSI on low pressure side with engine running A/C set to maximum and blowing) you have enough pressure, but there is air in the system which degrades the refrigerant leading to no cold air. To remedy this, you must completely discarge the system and refil with new R134a which has the compressor/system oil added to it.
To discharge the system, shut off motor, attach your filler hose to low pressure valve and allow system to drain. (squeeze handle if you have that type filler hose) Allow it to drain until no sound of escaping air is present. Be careful not to have the end of hose facing you or others, wear gloves and have some shop rags laid down, pointing nozzle toward rags, that stuff can damage paint and skin and may be cold when escaping. After system has completely drained, start the refil process with engine running, A/C on maximum, blower on full. After about 1/2 of the first can of R134a or 1 full can, your compressor should kick on. Continue refilling with 3-4 cans total (about 3 LBS total) until you have a reading of 45 or so PSI. After each can, allow refrigerent to cycle through the system about 3 minutes to obtain an accuret pressure reading. Pressure is relavent to outside temperature also, optimumly the ambient air temp. outside vehicle should be between 72 and 80 degrees F. for proper reading. That should get you blowing cold air again!

How do you tell if a goodman ck36-1b has proper level of freon.Lets say it is 75 degrees outside and I added to where the low side reads around 30 and the high side is around 120-130.(orignal problem was...


The correct way is to evacuate the system,pull a vacuum then charge with a refrigerant scale.
In lieu of that you can charge by pressure and get close.
Normal operating pressure would be 68 psi on the suction side and about 225/275 on the high side.
You do have to calculate the outdoor and indoor ambient temperature.
At your 75 degree outdoor air a low side pressure of 60 psi or higher would be acceptable.
Your 30/130 is too low.
Add more refrigerant.

Make certain the indoor coil is clean and the fan motor is working correctly.
Have the leak repaired.

AC blows warm. fan + compressor don't seem to engage.


The system could be low on refrigerant. The A/C pressure switch will not let the compressor run if the system pressure is below 28psi or above 455psi to protect the compressor from damage. At low pressures not enough oil (mixed in with the refrigerant) will circulate, and at high pressures, the compressor seals will likely blow. You can get a set of A/C manifold gauges for R-134a and check the system pressures yourself or get a shop to check it and possibly add some R-134a. If the system pressure checks good, then the A/C pressure switch, the compressor clutch, or some relays will need to be checked.

How many pounds of r134 and how much oil ozs.


somewhere around 1.6 pounds (1lb.14ounces) of R134a if system is evacuated and 3 ounces of oil with new compressor.
keep pressure on the low side around 34-37psi & it should blow snow. Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A.
  • Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI
  • Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI –
  • Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI
Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor.
DIY recharge kit:
With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience. If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system.

Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A.

Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI

Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI

Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI
Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor.

With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience.

If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system. The only proper way to remove refrigerant is with a AC recovery machine so if this is being done at home I can’t emphasize enough not to over charge the system.

Ac compressor took one can of freon will not take other also it still is not cool


You may have over charged the system, An over charged system will also give you poor A/C performance and worst can lead to expensive repair if the compressor get's damaged.
 With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience. If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold - STOP don’t overcharge the system. The only proper way to remove refrigerant is with a AC recovery machine so if this is being done at home I can’t emphasize enough not to over charge the system. And actually the best way to insure the proper charge is in a system, is to use an AC machine to recover the freon and then evacuate and recharge the system with the correct amount. Most cars have the specified amount on a decal under the hood.
