Go to start menu, select printers and faxes and see if the printer is set as default

You have not mentioned the operating system to download the software ?
Click on the link below to download the software by choosing the operating system
( By Default the O/s usually is 32 bit operating system. For ex. When you click the drop down list, you will find Windows XP 32 bit and Windows XP 64 bit, Choose the 32 bit )

I losr my installation cd to my J4540 printer can I download the info over the internet?;


If you mean the user manual for your printer, you can download from this link click here, (hp official website and i've selected the direct link for you). There are two files (links), click on the name of the link which you want to download. Files are in pdf format so if you have not installed a pdf reader, click the adobe reader button on the page.

Everytime i put in the disk for the officejet j4500 it says my computer isn't compatable with this unit I run windows 7 it says to fix the problem before going on


For that you need to install windows 7 drivers in your computer.
Drivers are same for j4500 series so you can install driver of j4540 because driver are same for j4500 series.
click here
Click on above link and select any mdel and then select os then download driver also there is some updates download updates too then install.
Then it will work .

I can't seem to scan from my officejet j4540 it states no scan option refer to documentation to troubleshoot. I don't have my manual.


The scan options are in your computer, you need to have HP scan software running before it will scan This tells the scanner how to scan, what it's scanning, and where to send the image and how to save it.

I have HP Officejet J4540 ALL-in- one. Could you send me an instruction manual, it only came with a disk, and I can not make it work. I need it for trouble shooting. Example; I printed on it and it worked...

Here is a link to download a manual to your computer:

J4500 Series Manual

After it completely downloads, click on "Save a Copy" (the small disk icon at the top) and save it in your Documents folder for future reference.

If you still cannot figure the problem out, I would certainly use the warranty and try to obtain a new one.

We just bought a HP Officejet J4540. I've inserted the disk & now nothing will install.


Hi rognvirg,

Let me ask this, did you hook the printer up to the computer before you installed the software. If so, un-install printer(uncable from computer) and printer software. Reboot your computer and install the software first, follow the setup wizard to the letter. In the event that doesn't help try rolling your computer back a week or so or try downloading new software from the printer manufacturers website(drivers/downloads and sometimes support. And if all else fails, take it back to the store and exchange for a different one. I hope this helps you.
