Question about Mtd Garden

Removed the deck on my Poulan pro to replace the sheared pins on the broken spindle. Now the mower wont go into gear?

Shouldn't the mower go into gear, even without the deck?

SOURCE: Craftsman 42in mower deck spindle breaks and Strips.

there are thousands of these mowers out there, and most people do not have the problem that you are experiencing - let's face reality, you are hitting something, that's the only way these break - it is impractical to make a machine that will mow through rocks, stumps, and water pipes and not break - also, sears does not MAKE anything, they contract companies to make products for them - if you want a thicker, tougher mandrel housing, log onto www.amcpartsstore.com. they recently began offering a heavy duty version of the mandrel housing, part no. 130794. i've seen these and they are definitely beefy - just be sure to put everything together correctly and tighten all the nuts and bolts firmly, and try to avoid the rocks and stumps

SOURCE: replacing a MTD spindle assembly

Yes, most spindles come with non threaded holes. The metal is soft and you can just use regular bolts. Once you start them, they cut their own threads.

I was cutting the grass when the small wheel on cutter deck touched a breeze block causing the engine to stop. Since then when I turn the engine on, the mower deck won't engage.

Sounds like you may have broken the shear pin in one of the drive pulleys. Check and see if your drive belt is in place and also make sure the belt is not broken. If you have hit something hard enough to stall the engine I feel you have to replace the shear pin.

Poulan pro spindle installation manual

Remove deck, remove nut from pulley on spindle, remove 3 bolts holding spindle, if spindle doesn't fall out, gentle tap it out, be careful not hit threads. Replace with new bearings. I always use the parts diagram remove things and put together in proper order. You should have parts diagram in your owner's manual.

We changed the blades, changes a spindle and checked the deck and tire pressure on our Poulan Pro Mower. It is still cutting uneven. What else should we check.

Well the plane of the spinning blades obviously is not parallel to the ground. While the ground will never be level, do what you can and first get the mower on a good piece of flat concrete. Measure distance between each corner of the mower deck to the concrete. You have had the deck off, the deck hang mechanisms have some adjustment so you can lower the front of the deck relative to the rear and vice versa, and lower the left relative to the right side, and vice versa. Look for threaded rods with adjusting nuts, pins which can go into different holes, etc.

As a last resort you could google "poulan, mower, manual" which would take you to their website and you can download the manual for the mower. All my mowers, MTD, Husq, Simplicity, came with a manual and had explicit instructions for this process. Most all these mowers are made by Roper or AYP and you may find information by googling those companies.

Mower deck belt pulley gone

There is what they call the spindle assembly. Some times if the bearing is not lubed enough or just plain old it will sieze up . When this happens the pulley shears off of the rod it spins on. The deck must be removed and you can buy a new spindle assembly. In most cases you need your old pully however or you will need a new one of those as well. The other possible solution could be the bolt came loos and it simply fell off . In that case you need a new pulley , bolt to hold it on , and a washer in the middle. Good Luck I just had this same problem on a mower I purchased to fix up. It cuts great now.

Poulan Pro Hydro 18.5-42 riding lawnmower- no drive...are there shear pins in the axle drives?

First check that the purge valve is not engaged. Usually a small rod sticking out the back plate of the unit toward the right side. It should be pushed in.
Next check your drive belt. Best bet is to remove the deck and lay under the unit. Check for locked up pulleys and that the belt is seated properly on all the pulleys and that the belt is not stretched, cracked, or burnt. Make sure the belt gets taught when brake/clutch is released.
Lastly, there are keys in the drive axles. I have never seen one fail but they do get lost on occassion when the wheels are removed.

you probaly have a broken gear or engagment lever. the part the cable goes through before the cable goes thru the deck. you also could have sheared a pin or the plastic gear that drives it.

Mower hit a big rock and stoped running

If you hit something hard enough to partially shear the key on the blade adapter, you did shear the key on the flywheel, and it will need to be replaced for the engine to run properly.
