Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

Sa 6400 Two weeks ago the freezer of my Kenmore refrigerator stopped keeping ice cream frozen. This week it stopped keeping anything frozen so I emptied the contents and found the right side blower vent iced over. I defrosted and removed the ice blockage but after 24hours I only have a moderately cool freezer. Is it finished or is there a fix?

If you just removed the ice from the front of the panels there is still a lot ice behind the panels. A complete defrost will be necessary. You may have a defrost problem. If you remove the panels you could check the defrost heater for continuity. if it is good then the defrost thermostat or timer could be the culprit.

SOURCE: freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your back.

SOURCE: Kenmore Refrigerator not cooling well.

you have a defrost problem there are three compontes to the defrost systems the defrost thermostat the defrost timer and the defrost heater now when you open the freezer door you should hear a fan running now bear with me on the lower left hand side of your freezer compartment around where the wheel is at the bottom of the cabinet you should see a round hole where a strange plastic screw head is turn that slowly to the right till the freezer fan stops now the timer is in defrost in your freezer compartment remove the lower panel and you will see the evaporator looks like an aluminum honey comb now you will see a heating element like in a stove that's your defrost heater and clipped on one of the tubes you will see a small dome shaped disc one wire coming from fridge one wire going to the heater element ok if you turned the defrost timer till the fan stopped and by this time the element isn't on then take the defrost thermostat out of the loop by un plugging the fridge for safety then unplug the defrost thermostat from the heater and the other side from the fridge .Plug the heater to the fridge where you unplugged the thermostat and if the heater comes on after plugging the fridge back up you have a bad defrost thermostat but for real folks the timer and thermostat usually fail close so close together i recommend just replacing them both at the same time . now while your chasing down the parts if you need to save your food can take a hair drier and after removing the back panel in the freezer melt all the ice there will work good for about 4 days before freezing again

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again

Cuisinart Ice Cream Freezer Bowls Not Freezing Anymore

I would take the freezer bowls out of the freezer, run them both under the sink to thaw both bowls out, dry both bowls thoroughly, and then set them both on the counter so that the liquid settles toward the bottom of the freezer bowls. After 1 hour, place the bowls FLAT back into the freezer - don't forget to wrap them in a plastic grocery bag or some other sort of plastic bag. Try to make ice cream again after 24 hours or more of freezing. Let me know if this works, so I can pass the good news along to others.

IS this unit a frost free? I'm wondering if the motor in your timer is running slow.If that happens it could take too long before the freeze cycle comes back on. Or check the terminator out. Either that or check the electric to make sure nothing shuts off the unit like a timer for the lights.

The freezer may get as low as -18 degrees F or 0 F this is the point when life and bacteria stops growing.
Ice cream shouldn't be that cold unless it is whipped with air.

Freezer not keeping things frozen

Hi Jody,
The only thing you give me that would allow me to solve this issue, is based on the fact that the freezer is getting warmer, and fresh food section is staying cold. So, knowing nothing more than that, I must sadly say that you need a new refrigerator to solve this issue 100%, as it sounds like you have a failing compressor, or a slow leak in the sealed system. Both scenarios are terminal.

Freezer way too cold - ice cream hard as a rock

I have the same problem and from reading on the web I think I have found the problem. It is a bad Freezer Thermistor and they are very inexpensive. I am posting a link that can help you determine if this is the problem.

I found some service instructions for Kitchenaid side by side fridges with electronic control. Since both your fridge and KA's are made by Whirlpool, the instructions should apply. I learned something new, there are TWO thermistors! To download the instructions go to Service Matters Online click on technical reference, then next pge click on I accept, next page click on technical library [left sidebar], next page click on job aids [left sidebar], next page click on search job aids [upper middle of the page], next page type in refrigerator then click on search, next page click on KA side by side electronic control [KAR-10], next page click on the pdf symbol, then print out the document.
