Question about Maytag Dryers

Open Question

Bought a Maytag Neptune dryer 2007. Been in storage for 3 yrs. Went to plug it in at new location. Four prong plug in wall. 3 prong on dryer. Bought new core & replaced it leaving green connection free. Connected red to red, black to black and 2 white to 2 white. Plugged it in and nothing. Fuse box seems fine. What can I look for in the dryer that might have gone bad.

The black, red & blue wires are your hot (120 volt) wires. Two of them get conn. to the two brass colored screws. The white is the neutral wire which conn. to the siver screw. The green wire is the ground wire conn. to the green screw which is the grounding screw.

SOURCE: i have a maytag neptune

yes, hook up the black with the black the white with the white and the red where the blue was,now the green is just a ground wire, all you have to do is connect it anywhere to the metal frame of the machine just to ground it,look around there should be a screw somewhere near the other wire connections if not remove any screw and connect it and it will be fine.

Maytag Neptune dryer went from 4 prong to 3 prong...cabinet light works but dryer we won't star

It's not wired right. You're only getting 110 vac to the machine which is why you are seeing some lights but no operation. Make sure when you went to the three prong plug you connected to both 110 vac lugs and common.

I have a 4 prong dryer but the plug in the wall is a three prong, ibought a four prong plug and i dont know how to connect a three wire into a four prong plug please help me.. hugo

Do NOT try and change the receptacle please. It is dangerous and we do not want anyone getting hurt. In your case, it would be better to put a 3 prong cord on the dryer. Overall you could call an electrician to install the 4 prong receptacle, which will require new 4 conductor wire as well and run to the breaker box. Get a flat style 3 prong dryer cord and we'll tell you how to install it. Unless you call an electrician. ;-) If this helps you, please rate my answer. Thank you.

My 220 plug is a three prong and the used dryer I bought has four prongs. Is there some type of adaptor I can buy to connect the two plugs such as what used for adapting a 110 line that has two different...

Hello Doris, You really don't want to get an adpater for this, (even if you could find one - they're not at all common) since the thickness of adding in an adapter would make the dryer stick out further from the wall, etc.

What you need to do is to get a new "pigtail" for the dryer that has the three (3) prong plug that matches your 220 Volt-AC wall outlet. These are available at most Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, or at any appliance or Hardware store. They don't cost all that much and will provide you with the correct plug and cord set for your house's electric dryer outlet.

The four (4) prong cord & plug has a separate ground wire in them, while the standard thre (3) prong plug uses the netural as the ground, or has a separate green wire running from the dryer cabinet to either a grounding screw on the wal plate, or to a ground ******** a water pipe (typically found in older homes)

Just be sure to unplug the dryer before changing the cordset out for the 3 prong one. Make sure the power is also off at the breaker panel too. Now at the rear of the dryer there is a small access panel where the cordset goes into the dryer. Remove that panle and you'll see three (3) connections on the panel along with a Green Grounding connection.

The connectors that get the power are the outside connectors, these are "HOT" and get 120 V-AC each (120 x 2 = 240 Volts AC) while the connector in the middle is the NEUTRAL connection point.

The wiring is straightforward and there should be a simple wiring diagram either on the access panel or the connection points should be labeled for each of the wiring fasteners (screws or nuts)

Just be sure to get the fasteners tight, and the new 3 prong cordset you buy should be long enough to reach from the dryer (when it's pulled away from the wall) to the house outlet. Typically they come in either a 3-4 foot length or the longer ones are 5-6 feet long. If in doubt, get the longer cordset. You can also check the wrapper of the new cordset, as they provide a simple wiring diagram also, to help you install it correctly.

Just be sure to add the included strain relief, as instructed, onto the cordset and put the access panel back on when you're done and you'll be all set to use that "new" used dryer!

I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

WHEN I MOVED MY NEPTUNE DRYER TO OUR MANUFACTURED HOME I HAD TO CHANGE THE PLUG FROM A THREE PRONG TO A FOUR PRONG AND CODE 88 IS ON, I WONDER IF I HAVE TO HOOK THE GROUND UP DIFFERENT?

There is a jumper in between the neutral and ground terminals. In order hook up the 4 prong plug correctly you need to remove that jumper to separate the ground and neutral terminals.

Changing a 3 prong plug into a regular outlet plug.

Your plug is for 220v and a regular wall outlet is 110volts. It simply will not work. You will burn out your dryer, and place yourself at risk of electrocution.

Wire 3 prong cord

Electric Dryer How To Hook Up Cord pixel_trans.gifFor Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.

For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case. In this Photo (A Whirlpool Dryer) I have ran the wire that runs from the center terminal, the Light Green wire, back to itself rather than cutting it off, just incase I need to put a 3 prong cord back on it some day. The whole purpose of this 3 prong / 4 prong thing is it separates the neutral from the ground. pixel_trans.gif pixel_trans.gif3 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example terminalblock.jpg 4 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example 4prongcord_small.jpg

Four prong plug to three prong plug

Kalola,
You can if you want to, but it's not generally necessary. Here's a picture of a 3 prong configuration with a ground strap...
df8caf5.jpg

That green wire with the yellow stripe is a ground and it is most definitely connected to the cabinet somewhere. So it will serve as the ground strap (in the above picture).

Here's the thing... say you were going from a 3 prong to a 4 prong. That is, the dryer was originally "designed" for a 3 prong. This means you'd have to "retrofit" it a bit. Take a look at this pic... ( I made this for someone else, so please disregard my somewhat hostile remarks, OK?)
22c744f.jpg

The ground strap has been removed and has been replaced by the ground to the frame. Yours probably does NOT have a ground strap, though... yours uses that Green/Yellow wire for frame ground.

All of that to say this. Don't lose sleep over it. Ya done good.
