My lawnmower is a Honda HR 214 type SXA. The starter cord quit retracting. How do I fix that?

Also, the starter cord needs replacing. I carefully unbolted the top, looked around, and put it back on. I need advice. Thanks.

How do u fix a loose starter cord people?

Hi Rick:
Most starter cords rely on a recoil spring to make them retract.
Sometimes when the cord is replaced it is longer than the original so just needs to be shortened. Pull the cord all the way out and if you have way more than you use for a pull start, then shortening it is a fast fix.
To do that, pull out the cord a couple of feet. flip a slip knot in it to keep it from retracting, then take the start handle apart and shorten the cord about 6 inches. Should work fine.
If the cord is talready too short to make it shorter, you'll need to put another wind on the spring.
Reply as a COMMENT to this post af you need coaching through that.
Hint. Don't dismantle the spring assembly so it can get out. They are related to rattlesnakes.
Cheers.

Fix recoil when pull cord on sanli lawnmower broke

Take the starter assembly off the mower. Unwind the spool using whatever method works (2 screwdrivers?) until you capture the remaining. cord. Pull it all the way out. Pin the spool so that it can't retract. Remove and replace the cord. Re-assemble. Back to cutting grass!

Starter cord on lawnmower will not pull out

Hi Mary. You will need to remove the starter box on your mower. The coil box may be rusty or the pully may need fixing. Try using some oil spray and see if the pully now works. If the starter coil is clean the mower may be ceased.

How do i fix the pull start and re tension it so cord retracts?

You take the top of the motor off with the starter, then rewind the spring, then is a good idea to replace the rope with a new one they sell rope at a lawnmower store, get 5 feet or more if the rope is up on the handle, take a piece of rope with you to get the correct size.

I have a Briggs & Stratton Sprint 3.75 hp lawnmower and it seems the cord is pulled almost all the way out and won't retract. How will i know if it is broken? or should I be able to wind it back up...

You should be able to Fix this yourself if your a fair garage tinkering mechanic. However...I need the engine and type number off of the engine to get you parts information. The spring is broken in your recoil. It is a matter of removing the air shroud, taking off the pulley / spool and changing the spring.

and how to tension the spring:

There are 2 different types of springs used so having your engine model / type number is important so that you can get the right spring. One of the 2 part numbers is: 390066

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

GXV140 Carburetor removal

The carb just slides off of the posts. The gaskets are holding it on and may tear when you pull it off. The linkages must be disconnected to get it off as well. There are two bolts on the throttle plate that can be removed so the plate can move to make disconnecting the linkages easier. Some people remove the posts by threading two nuts on and tightening them against each other so that the inner one can be turned to unscrew the post. That didn't work for me as both nuts still turned together.

Pullcord violently retracting on Craftsman lawnmower

It is possible that the 'dogs' that engage the crankhaft were stuck in the out (engaged position). Once the engine started, it wound the rope in the opposite direction until the dogs slipped and retracted. Romve the top cover that includes the pull start unit. Check for smooth and sticky free operation while pulling on the cord. Try using a very light oil to lube if nessesary.
